A favorite episode of mine
mloessel13 January 2018
Warning: Spoilers
In this episode Andy does a good job of being suspicious and this time it costs him some money. The money he loses is from not investing in an album that proves to be very popular and sells immediately. A producer visits Mayberry and Ellie introduces him to Andy who in turn connects him to the local talent of folk song players. Barney and others invest in the album and Andy declines believing the man to be a con artist. Towards the end His suspicions are proven wrong when the producer later returns with a contract and an initial dividend check of $5000.00. There's nothing Andy can say accept stand there and realize how wrong he was.

One of the only times when Andy is wrong and the whole town is right!

Warning: Spoilers
Usually, Andy plays the voice of reason that is able to get the town to stop and think. That's because although the folks of Mayberry are nice, they also have a tendency to become a flock of sheep without a single brain between them! And, Andy sees himself as their reluctant shepherd.

The show begins with a city man coming to town to scout for local musical talent. He claims to be a music producer who is interested in folk and bluegrass music and the folks of town are only too happy to perform for him. That's because they all have visions of becoming rich off the royalties they might get if they become famous. And, when he claims he MIGHT be able to produce a record and the folks start giving him money for this project, Andy is naturally suspicious. He eventually goes so far as to accuse the man of being a con-man--and eventually it looks like he might be right. But, in a rare instance, by the end of the film the stranger turns out to have been on the level and Andy is forced to eat crow, so to speak.

Overall, a decent episode. While it's certainly not a funny one, it was nice to finally see Andy be wrong for a change--providing a surprise finale. Well done.

Small Town Minds

When the townspeople invest in record producer, they expect immediate profit. The fact is that there never was a guarantee. They begin to malign a man who did nothing wrong and Andy is right behind them, even though he didn't invest himself. Mayberry is at its provincial best as this transpires.

Ice cream sundae getting bigger and bigger.

Why would an intelligent woman like Ellie (Elinor Donahue) put her complete trust in a complete stranger Maxwell (Hugh Marlowe)? Kind of cheapens the episode. Season 1 appears there has to be conflict between Andy & Ellie at any cost to the writing. Funny bit about the buffalo on the nickels. Terrific music by the Country Boys band. Floyd (Howard McNear) gives the first look at his hilarious frightened expression when he sees Maxwell return. The town investing in a questionable venture will be done much better with Roger Perry digging for a treasure in the color episodes. Bit of a below average flat episode.
