There are steps in creating a bond with your new father.

Warning: Spoilers
At first sight, farmer Charles Bickford doesn't easily seem like the gentle sort, but as the old cliche goes, looks can be deceiving. He's sent for a mail order bride and gets a visit from middle aged Barbara Stanwyck and her teenage son David Kent who seems to not want to attempt a relationship with him.

But during the visit (a trial to see if they'll get along), something bizarre happens. The two men bond, and all seems fine. But the sudden arrival of Stanwyck's missing husband, Gerald Mohr, shows up, complicating things. This western episode of "The Barbara Stanwyck Show" takes her back to her favorite genre, and in mixing it with genuine human emotions makes it something special. A surprise twist ending adds to the impact.

Very smooth western drama

Yes, smooth, as many other stories from this series, but no uninteresting. OK, you have the host guest Barbara Stanwyck, but the story is rather not so usual and the acting above average, as good as in a long film. It takes place in a western town, with stagecoach and saloons, gunman and sheriff, but that doesn't make it a western either. Looks like some old Republic Pictures movies, hesitating between western and musical, drama or thriller. The character study between the young boy and his new stepfather and also Stanwyck, his mother is moving. You nearly forget and also forgive the predictable ending. Directed by the great Jacques Tourneur.
