Enjoyable Episode

Even though it involved yet another Jones relative, (well, a Goddaughter anyway), I thought the story was interesting and a little different than normal.

Ron Hayes (as Sheriff Oscar Hamlin), Bibi Osterwald (as Grace Claymer), Ric Carrott (as Lester Deverill), Greg Evigan (as Blue Simpson), and Don Keefer (as Tully Kupper) all did a fine job. Evigan isn't the greatest actor in the world but he's just so likable that it makes up for it. A lot of people have talked about Bonnie Ebsen (as Laurie) being a bad actress, but I don't think she's that bad. She isn't going to win an Emmy, but I find her rather endearing. Overall it was a fun episode, and thankfully, it was all Barnaby. I like Betty and JR, but they are better in small doses. Buddy Ebsen really carries the show.

BARNABY AND THE GOLD MINE CAPER!
tcchelsey2 May 2024
No question producer Robert Sherman gave Buddy Ebsen's daughter a part in this episode, and a very good role at that.

I agree with the last reviewer, the story has a very interesting slant. Bonnie Ebsen plays Laurie, who happens to be Barnaby's god daughter, and who is about to come into a fortune in gold. Amazing. Enter handsome and crafty Greg Evigan (as Blue Simpson) who wants the gold mine all to his greedy self, even if he has to kill for it.

Tag this a crime drama slash soap opera of sorts, and with a sharp cast. Bonnie Ebsen, who appeared six times on the series, does a fairly good job here, matched by Greg Evigan, who at the time was starring in his own series, BJ AND THE BEAR, and playing a good guy who all of us kids back in the day really liked. This was an offbeat role for him. Ron Hayes plays the sheriff, later to appear on DALLAS and veteran actress Bibi Osterwald plays Grace.

To her credit, Bonnie Ebsen co-starred in the short lived tv series THE KALLIKAKS a year earlier, and in the 80s guested on DAYS OF OUR LIVES.

10 Stars for director Robert Sherman who wrote this change of pace story. Great late night entertainment. SEASON 7 EPISODE 24 remastered color/CBS. Released 2018.

Starring Buddy and Bonnie Ebsen!
planktonrules5 August 2021
Buddy Ebsen's daughter, Bonnie, appeared in several episodes of "Barnaby Jones" and even starred in a few. While she is probably a lovely person, her acting was not great. I'll say no more about this.

When the story begins, Blue murders a prospector in order to steal his claim. Apparently, there's gold and greed makes Blue money-crazy. But after killing the man, he realizes his niece will inherit the property, so his plan is to romance and marry her so he'll have access to this fortune. Unfortunately, Laurie is already about to marry another guy....so Blue needs to discredit the guy so he has access to her. But one of the guests for the upcoming wedding is Barnaby, so you know he'll dig to uncover the truth.

Like the last time Bonnie Ebsen starred in the series, this time the writers didn't help her very much. Her character seemed rather dim...a woman who changed her mind rather easily. This certainly didn't help the episode. However, despite this, it's modestly enjoyable and worth seeing.
