In a rather bizarre story, we learn that Jarrod has been made the ward of a sixteen year old girl named Laura Hayden (Kathy Graver of 'Family Affair' fame). Seems Ms Laura was the child of wealthy parents but both had died and Jarrod is in charge of her money until she reached a certain age. As you would guess Laura is a head strong girl that believes she is grown-up enough to make her own decisions in life. And she bumps heads with Jarrod, much like she did with her father, about going back to school and how to spend her money.
About this time a seventeen year old Prince of India, Ranjit Singh, happens to be coming to Stockton in hopes of raising money for his people back in India. And as you may have already guessed, Ms Laura begins falling in love with the young Prince and also wants to give the Prince a large sum of money from her estate.
Unknown to most, the Prince is really a common boy that happened to come to America on a ship owned by Captain Crawford. Crawford is now pretending to be the overseer of the Prince's affairs and the intention is to get the donated money and keep it for himself.
When Crawford is recognized by a local, the scheme is put into high gear. The Prince proposes marriage to the young Ms Laura and they are to set out for San Fran the next day. Things go bad when Crawford wants the Prince to leave the girl in the wilderness. The fake Prince will try to defend the honor of Ms Laura or at least die trying.
NOTE-Without giving a 'spoiler alert' I will try to be vague in the last paragraph-- but you have to see the end of the show. The Prince, or should we say Ranjit, comes into the Barkley house alongside Heath. I have never seen such great care with costume design as I did with neckerchiefs. All I can say is that they wanted you to notice the neckerchiefs and boy-oh-boy they accomplished the task.
