- The Cartwrights and Candy come across a town deserted following an Indian attack. The sole survivor is a man locked up in the jail until a woman, claiming to have escaped the attack, turns up.
- It appears as though some trouble with the Indians has started as Ben, Hoss, Joe and Candy see signals and find a deserted town and a man with a Paiute arrow in him and four others dead including two scalped. A prisoner is found in the jail who could possibly shed some light on the situation. Josh Tanner claims that his murder charge was due to shooting a Coulter in Coulter County even though it was a fair fight and the Coulter drew first. A woman named Mary Burns is also left behind and manages to escape back to the now deserted town, as many others were wiped out by the Paiutes. She comes along with the Cartrights and Tanner, only to be captured by the Paiutes when they are all surprised by a raid. Tanner wants to go after Mary, but Ben has other plans...to go where the Paiutes will least expect them...right into their camp. Tanner and Candy go into the teepee to free Mary while the Cartrights chase away the horses. When they get to town, Ben encourages Tanner to go to see the sherriff on his own so he could tell the truth about his case and Mary finds out that indeed her husband, Paul, was looking for her.Tanner has the good news that a judge was investigating how Coulter had played fast and loose with the law to his own ends. Ben offers him a job when what promises to be only a short jail stay until the trial, but Tanner figures if he has a choice, he'll move on.
