Tender

Warning: Spoilers
Inger Stevens made Bonanza history with this third episode of the series where she becomes the first female to fall for a Cartwright son and the first to die. It was the preferred method of the writers of Bonanza to keep the all male Cartwright family unit intact.

An expedition is led by mining magnate John Larch and his partner Robert Knapp. Along with the group is Knapp's sister Inger Stevens who is in an advanced stage of tuberculosis. Knapp wants to also get her to a dry desert climate.

Of course the Cartwrights don't want them on the Ponderosa or anywhere near with their hydraulic mining techniques. But Hoss takes an interest in Stevens and after a while she does with him.

The scenes between Stevens and Dan Blocker are quite tender. Blocker delivers one of his best performances and really in this story establishes a lot more facets to the Hoss Cartwright character. Sad that both Stevens and Blocker died young.

This story is for Hoss's legions of fans still out there.

Hoss Falls in Love
mitchrmp27 December 2013
Hoss is the first Cartwright to experience love and loose it (on air, anyways). It all starts when Ben finds a group trying to travel via their land. John Pennington had crossed his land before and caused a lot of trouble when he installed pumps for mining and destroyed an orchard and a man's dream. Pennington was back now with his sick sister who needed to get to a dryer climate. Pennington was a good man who had no intentions to harm the Cartwrights.

Unfortunately, Blake McCall didn't feel the same way. He had no intention on leaving the land and had already bought several claims around Ben's land to mine using pumps. Pennington fought him over it and Hoss was elected to escort them off the land. Hoss had initially scared Emily, but as they traveled together, she warmed up to Hoss. Things didn't go as planned - at least for the good guys - and Blake took over the escorting. He killed the foreman and stole the guns, planning on getting rid of every last Cartwright.

Hoss's romance comes in during the second half after he and Emily are able to escape. As he cares for Emily, he promises to take care of her always. But circumstances, as usual, causes Emily to take drastic measures to save Hoss's heart from breaking even more than it already has.

Inger Stevens and Dan Blocker make this special....
Popeye-819 August 2012
Warning: Spoilers
I didn't see this episode until some thirty years after it was produced...but for me, it is one of a precious few Bonanza episodes that I hold dear. Inger Stevens is an absolute marvel as a dying young woman who is sadly part of a criminal family that has crossed the Cartwrights--and she falls in love with Hoss when he shows her the "beauty" that hides beneath the "beast". Hoss, while acting as their protection as they return to California, proves to be her knight in shining armor--but she know that she is dying; as a result, she cannot allow him to love her, either.

Eventually, these "dying girlfriend" plot lines would become routine in Bonanza (I used to use the line "that lasted about as long as a Cartwright wife")--but this one was the first--and the most powerful. We see the gruff Hoss blossom as he clumsily but tenderly reveals his emotions, and as he tries to understand why she won't--and can't--love him in return...and we feel his pain and loss.

This episode, along with the tragic "Forever", represent the Bonanza franchise for me.
