There's a serious outbreak of rustling going on and Ben Cartwright has called a meeting at the Ponderosa. The ranchers decide a range detective is what they need and Sheriff Bing Russell confers on him a deputy's badge to make his work official. Joe Cartwright suggests that his friend Steve Forrest be hired as he has peace officer experience.
Forrest has two problems. He's keeping company with a lewd woman Miriam Colon who wants him to bring them in dead. That way he gets the money because God forbid if they're tried and found not guilty Forrest doesn't see a dime. The second is fellow rancher Warren Kemmerling who while he doesn't have a Ponderosa style spread has a large place and he'd like to use Forrest's authority to settle a personal score.
The guest cast steals this one from the regulars. Forrest is a most conflicted man and Colon is more desperate for a good life than truly evil. Truly evil is Kemmerling however.
Michael Landon keeps Forrest on the straight and narrow in this Bonanza story.
