Theodore Roosevelt was never a member of Congress. He was a New York state assemblyman in the early 1880s. After his mother and his first wife died on the same day, he moved to his cattle ranch in the Dakota Territory in 1884. His cattle herd was wiped out by an extremely harsh winter, so he returned to New York in 1886 and married for the second time. He lost a campaign for mayor of New York, but was named a commissioner on the U.S. Civil Service Commission and served from 1889-1895. After that he was President of the New York City Board of Police Commissioners (1895-1897), Assistant Secretary of the Navy (1897-1898), and Governor of New York (1899-1900), before becoming Vice President of the United States in 1901. He acceded to the presidency when President William McKinley died from a gunshot wound on September 14, 1901.
As in the previous episode, the Arizona state flag, designed in 1910 and adopted in 1917, appears in this episode. The series is set in the 1880s. The flag will probably appear again throughout the series.
