See Cannon as the great action hero!
planktonrules6 June 2013
While I have enjoyed recently watching old reruns of "Cannon" on DVD, I do have to laugh a bit at the athletics they had the character doing on the show. Now I must admit that William Conrad's stunt doubles were great--and seamlessly integrated into the show. But, the idea of a 300 pound man jumping out of moving trucks, delivering kicks to his opponents and regularly beating up baddies--now that IS pretty funny!

"A Lonely Place to Die" begins with a triple murder. However, the witnesses aren't exactly forthright in talking about it and the bodies have disappeared--making the police doubt that anything has happened. When Cannon investigates, however, he learns that three folks indeed were killed--and he and his lady client might just be next! All the crazy stunts I mentioned above occur in this episode--making it tough to believe but also filled the show with a lot of action. This, combined with a decent plot, make this pretty exciting to watch and another good episode of the series. Not 100% believable...but still good.

THREE HOMICIDES, AND CANNON MAY BE NEXT!
tcchelsey22 July 2022
After all his years as a director, William Conrad showed he definitely was still quite an actor. I think what producer Quinn Martin was trying to do was a little experimenting. So... this episode finds Cannon as an amateur sea captain, touching up his boat. To tell you the truth, he still looked like a retired director.

The fun does not last long. Three people are killed, there are witnesses who won't talk, and in steps a desperate young woman called Nina ( Carol Rosson) who wants Cannon to find her missing brother. At first he doesn't take her very seriously, until the road leads to mob boss Harold Gould. Gould is perfect for this type of role, originally an acting teacher who quit to jump in front of cameras himself.

This is an intriguing story that starts to build slowly. One of Quinn Martin's most reliable directors, William Hale handled the episode, note some nice beach shots that turn a bit ominous very quickly. Hale directed such classic shows as THE FBI and the INVADERS.

Carol Rosson was an accomplished actress in her own right; her famous father, Robert Rossen, wrote many top screenplays, including BODY AND SOUL (1947), the grand daddy of boxing films, and co-starring William Conrad. Good trivia question.

There's action in this one, the junk yard truck chase and game of hide and seek with the goons is a lot of fun. Bill Conrad obviously didn't do all the stunts, but he did many through the years and we kids loved this stuff.

Writer Jack Turley is to be credited for writing some excellent dialogue, and the scene where Nina nearly shoots Gould herself is a gem. Veteran actress Rose Hobart (DR. JEKYLL AND MR. HYDE) plays Nina's mother, a regular on PEYTON PLACE in the 60s. Gruff and tough RG Armstrong plays the sheriff.

Very clever ending that actually has a house-full of witnesses. This bit was also used on an episode of COLUMBO. The only episode where we catch Cannon wearing shorts! Question; does Nina have a slight crush on Cannon?

Filmed at beautiful Marina del Rey, about five miles from Santa Monica.

SEASON 1 EPISODE 9 remastered CBS/Paramount dvd box set #1 of 2, 4 disc set, 10 hrs.

Ok

While investigating a triple homicide, Cannon discovers a syndicate leader may be the next victim. An ok episode, a bit complicated but it moves swiftly and has some good action sequences, where William Conrad does well.
