Cannon plays messages on Udo Giesen's answering machine: one woman left them in French but with a strong accent, and he isn't French, so that made no sense.
Cannon later spoke to Giesen's mother who verified that Udo grew up in a town on the French/German border, and although a German, he grew up speaking French. Besides, in the office it was clear that he understand the phone message in French.

Arthur Rogers' scheme would not have worked. His plan was to remain in L.A. for a couple of months before leaving for South America so as to not arouse suspicions. But he couldn't have gotten away with this for long, as the family of the supposedly dead wife would tell the police the dead woman was another woman, and the family of the dead mistress would eventually contact the police about their missing family member. The police would have also requested information on the wife to positively identify the dead person (they don't just accept someone's word on it).
