Decent...

Leslie Charleston and Richard Hatch star in "Sky Above, Death Below". The show starts with Kate (Charleston) approaching Cannon to get him to accept her case. She claims that her father is not guilty of the murder he's charges with committing and wants Frank Cannon to investigate. However, he's hesitant to investigate, as it seems like an open and shut case. But, when Cannon does accept the case, he finds that there is more to it than meets the eye. There MIGHT be a witness who can prove the man's innocence. The problem is that this guy (Hatch) is on the run--as he's refusing to be drafted. Can Cannon find the guy AND stop the baddies from killing them both? What do you think?

This is an interesting show because it takes an interesting stance on the Vietnam War. Cannon encourages the witness to stand his ground--instead of running, be willing to go to jail to protest the war. And, the show is rather interesting and worth seeing. Not among the series' best, but still quite good.

Warning: Spoilers
The previous commenters were mistaken. Katherine "Kate" Machen's (the lovely Leslie Charleson) father Christopher Machen (Norman Foster) was the murder victim, not the accused. She asks Frank Cannon (William Conrad) to help prove that he was murdered, and to catch the killer. The father was a union leader, and he was trying to rid the union of corruption. (Side note: it was off-season at the ski lift where the murder happened, there was no snow on the ground there). The killing happens to be witnessed by Lyle Barry (hunky Richard Hatch, billed here as Richard Lawrence Hatch), who Kate likes (and vice versa) and who is on the run to avoid the draft during the Vietnam War. So Frank and Kate have to find Lyle before Christopher's killers do, and then Kate and Lyle have to overcome her anger at his running to dodge the draft instead of staying and testifying against Kate's father's killers. Cannon tells Lyle he should either stay and take a stand against the war, or stay and join the service, but don't run away.

CANNON'S DATE IS INTERRUPTED BY MURDER?
tcchelsey16 August 2022
AT LAST... we finally see widower Frank Cannon with a date! Unfortunately, his gal pal (played by model and actress Elaine Devry) has to wait while he helps a client. Devry may look familiar, married to Mickey Rooney at one time and appeared in many classic Warner Brother/ABC tv shows, either produced or directed by William Conrad. They make a nice couple, and Elaine should have returned for a second "date." Ya think?

Cannon spends more time with Leslie Charleson (best known for GENERAL HOSPITAL) who wants him find out who killed her father, supposedly falling from a ski lift. She really needs his help. This is where it gets tricky as there's a witness (played by Richard Hatch) --but he's got a wild posse on his tail. Hatch was always at his best playing a twenty-something in some sort of trouble. Raspy voiced good/bad guy Ken Lynch is also on board, never to be trusted. Cannon and Leslie make a solid team here.

Veteran director Norman Foster (CHARLIE CHAN) makes an appearance, playing Christopher. He was an old friend of Bill Conrad. Foster was vintage Hollywood, married to 1930s actress Sally Blane, and it would have been neat had she made a brief appearance too, but was long retired. Look for veteran actress Nora Marlowe (as Bertha) who would pop up in various episodes.

An especially beautifully filmed outdoor adventure.

This episode was shot at Colorado's sprawling San Juan National Forest, measuring nearly two million acres. It's based about 400 miles south of Denver. One of the few episodes produced outside California, and watch for the picturesque ending with a few surprises.... Ken Lynch is always fun.

SEASON 2 EPISODE 2 remastered CBS/Paramount dvd box set 1 of 2, 3 dvd set. 10 hrs. 2009 release.
