THE CASE OF THE VERY HOLY HIT MAN?
This is perhaps one of the best roles character actor Val Avery ever did. Here, he plays Leo, a notorious hitman, who wants Frank to do him a favor? The opening scene with he and Cannon in the famous green kitchen is creative writing 101. Thanks to veteran director William Wiard.
Leo's next assignment is to kill a bishop, but since he hasn't long to live --why not have Cannon take over -- and at the same time sack a big time mobster? Ray Danton plays this role so smoothly, and with a nice wardrobe. Danton caught fire in the late 50s as a hipster villain and ran with it for years.
This is intriguing stuff, but I had to take off one star because the question remains... Wouldn't Cannon be recognized by the mob? If you are willing to sidestep that (and quite frankly, this had also been tried on MANNIX in various ways), its a super adventure and with a knockout ending.
Don't miss the CLANGING church bells, an old bit but fitting for this wild bunch.
Credit Robert Heverly, who wrote a ton of episodes for the F. B. I. Applause for Richard Kiley who plays the bishop. Kiley had previously played a dishonest police captain in COLUMBO. In fact, everybody does a dynamic job with their offbeat roles.
I also think had Stephanie Powers not been promoted for the season premier, this SHOULD have been the first episode, it takes off fast. All us kids talked about it in school.
Look for one of the best, Paul Stewart (who began his career with CITIZEN KANE). Stewart was a master at playing gentlemen villains. An original.
Truth be told, the show was a fad, at times a dark comedy, and with the very best actors, writers and directors (some legendary) to its credit. This is the perfect example.
On the serious side, this is also a violent episode, partly set at famous St. Finbar Church in Burbank, of all places. The church as of September 2023 celebrated its 85th year and with it were many Hollywood memories, and I am sure there were references to this episode. The church had been asking for lots of old photos, films and testimonials. In 50 plus years, the church has changed very little.
SEASON 4 EPISODE 2 remastered color CBS dvd box set. 6 dvds. 21 hours. 2016 release. Similar in design to the MANNIX box sets.
