The judge set bail of $50,000 after the defendant had been convicted of second-degree murder, and before sentencing. While post-conviction bail is not uncommon, the seriousness of the crime and the length of the potential sentence would seem to preclude bail in this instance. Even with considerable bail, a man facing more than a decade in prison would have to pose a significant flight risk. Even though the judge used the man's services later, he didn't know he'd need them at this point.
