No, this is not "The Fugitive", but Cannon is out to find the one-armed man.

"Treasure of San Ignacio" is far from a great episode of "Cannon". Still, however, it is mildly entertaining and worth seeing.

The show begins with some hoods committing a very strange and improbable crime--they rob a Mexican church of some holy relics!! This is by far the weakest aspect of the show, as it seems like a crime you'll never see. Still, the priest (Alejandro Rey) seeks out Frank Cannon's help in recovering the stolen items. Soon, however, the crooks contact the priest--it's a case of ransom and Cannon is the man to make the deal. But when the deal goes sour, the priest is kidnapped and Cannon is in search of a one-armed man.

This is an entertaining show but as I mentioned above, the crime seemed very, very improbable. Not bad at all--but one that just seemed like a bit of a let-down compared to most other season one shows.

TAB HUNTER AS THE ELUSIVE ONE ARM MAN?
tcchelsey2 August 2022
Watch this episode, as it rolls fast.

Alejandro Rey (popular tv actor) plays Father Joseph, a close friend of Cannon whose church is robbed of priceless relics. The investigation includes a one-armed man (exceptionally played by former teen idol Tab Hunter), a role which "may" have been lifted in part from Quinn Martin's THE FUGITIVE. At least, the idea is there.

Hunter was a Warner Brothers star (DAMN YANKEES, among other hits) who obviously knew William Conrad during his years at the studio as a director and producer. Old Hollywood sticks together. As I have written earlier, the series at times was a WB tv reunion. Fun to spot many, many actors from classic tv shows, even in bit parts.

Familiar actor Judson Pratt plays Cannon's old police pal, Mike. Pratt also appeared on MANNIX and IRONSIDE. Look for Warren Stevens as Lt. Wharton, another popular actor on tv for years. COLUMBO alumnus Val Avery plays a slippery pawn shop owner. One of his very best roles would come in a fourth season episode as a dying gangster.

From a wardrobe standpoint, the second half of the first season (about this time) is where Cannon starts to dress more casually, though still puffing his pipe. One mystery though... whatever happened to the cool shooting gallery in his Hollywood penthouse?

The tense ending with Hunter and Rey is terrific, and I think Tab Hunter should have been nominated for an Emmy in this one.

Filmed partly at the famous LA Hyperion water plant which had a distinct look, and was in scores of tv shows. Tag this 10 stars and recommended late night stuff. SEASON 1 (1972) EPISODE 16 remastered CBS dvd box set Box 2 of 2 (2008).
