This Checkmate episode finds Sebastian Cabot and Doug McClure going undercover as butler and chauffeur in a household to prevent a murder. But whose murder? The kicker here is neither Cabot or McClure know who hired them and who they have to protect. It was all done through an attorney.
This is some household. Mona Freeman is a twice widowed woman, first husband fell down a flight of stairs and got cut with a sword on a suit of armor, the second one disappeared. She has a third prospect in Robert Rockwell who is paying court. But she also has a very disturbed adolescent daughter played by Judy Sanford who has killed many a courtship and just might be a bad seed. There's a caustic cook in Reta Shaw and a family adviser in Russell Collins who doles out the money.
It's from this interesting brew of witches and warlocks in the figurative sense that Cabot and McClure have to piece it together. As for Cabot this was dress rehearsal for his next series as Brian Keith's butler in A Family Affair.
Not hard to figure out, but still nice characterizations all around.
