Warning: Spoilers
Maria Gaetano has been very nice to Corky, even Joey teases Corky that Maria is trying to steal Corky from him. Joey sends Corky over to their wagon with some giant lollipops for some lost kids. Two are found but one is a runaway and Corky doesn't want to turn him over to the sheriff. Corky offers to keep Gene with the circus for three days as they wait to see if Gene's parents show up. Then Gene will have to be turned over.

Gene turns out to be more trouble than he is worth for Corky. But Gene is really jealous of Corky and all his friends. Gene seems to like horses so Julio Gaetano takes him on for a few days. But he lies about Corky. Maria takes a liking to Gene and starts calling him Jeano which bothers Julio as that was his father's name. Julio warns Maria about getting too attached to the boy. He isn't theirs.

On the second night, Corky finds Gene missing from the wagon. He is sleeping on the hay with the horses. Corky hears him shouting on in his sleep "not to beat him, he will work harder." The next morning, he has convinced some of the trainers to help him learn to ride the horses like the Gaetanos. Julio tells the boy to clean up the tent and feed the horses. When the Gaetanos return to the tent, they find Gene has taken a piece of jewelry. He was showing it to Corky and claiming he has it because he was going to be part of the act. Gene gives it back but claims his parents have arrived to take him home, so this is goodbye.

The sheriff shows up looking for Gene. He is an orphan and has run away from the farmer he was bound over to. The sheriff has to take him back but doesn't want to. If Julio wants him he can have him. Julio catches up to Gene and offers to adopt him and make him part of the act. Gene, now Jeano, has a home.
