DANIEL BOONE – The Trek -1965

This is the 35th episode of the long running 1964-70 series about the life of American frontiersman and explorer, Daniel Boone. The lead is played by Fess Parker. Also in the mix are, Ed Ames, Patricia Blair, Veronica Cartwright and Darby Hinton. This is from season two which was the first season to be filmed in colour.

Daniel Boone (Fess Parker) is approached by a man, John Lupton, with a message from the Governor. The Governor would like Parker to go after the leader of a gang of murderous trappers. The man, Aldo Ray, and his men, Roy Jenson, Ted White and Charles Horvath are a pain in the side of decent folk. Aldo and his bunch are robbing supply trains, selling powder and whiskey to the tribes and just generally stirring up trouble on the frontier.

Parker decides to play the part of a whiskey peddler and stocks up on some strong jugs from trading post owner, Dal McKennon. Parker then heads off into an area that Aldo in known to frequent. It does not take long and Parker falls in with Aldo Ray and gang.

The villains decide to sample Parker's goods and are soon laid out cold. Parker ties up Ray's wrists and hauls him out of camp back towards Fort Boonesborough.

Needless to say it would be too simple to make the journey without any trouble. First up are several roving gangs of Indians. They are a tad upset with the sub-par rifles Ray had sold them. Next up, is that Ray's gang are now in hot pursuit of their leader. A third problem turns out to be John Lupton, the man from the Governor's office.

Lupton is really a bounty hunter. The letter had been a fake to get Parker to do the dirty work for him. Parker smells a rat when Lupton meets them on the trail and offers to take Ray the rest of the way. Ray mentions that he knows Lupton, and that he is a bounty hunter. Fists fly and Lupton is laid out. Parker intends to take Ray in anyways. He is a wanted man.

Of course everything now comes to a head as the Natives, Lupton and Ray's gang all converge on the same location at the same time. A large free for all ensues with fists, lead, arrows and tomahawks a flying every which way. The bad guys get put down and Parker gets to head home.

There is plenty going on in this episode with director George Sherman showing his big screen expertise at handling the action sequences.
