- Clay McCord: Are you Lex Denton?
- Lex Danton: Yeah, that's right, but I didn't expect a welcoming committee.
- Clay McCord: Marshal Fry sent word you were headed in this direction.
- Lex Danton: Any law against that?
- Clay McCord: Well, that depends on what you got in mind.
- Lex Danton: Well, I'm here just like any other peaceful citizen.
- Clay McCord: That don't hardly fit your description.
- Lex Danton: Well, four years in prison more or less quiets a man down. Warden called it... rehabilitation.
- Lex Danton: Mary, a man never stops looking for his wife.
- Mary Willis: Why did you lie to me, Lex? Why didn't you tell me the truth when you were courting me?
- Lex Danton: Because you would have said "No."
- Mary Willis: All right, so I said it several months later.
- Sergeant Hapgood Tasker: [to Mary] You know, about the only time I remember I got duties is when the Deputy introduces me to somebody, so I guess I better go take care of 'em.
- Sergeant Hapgood Tasker: Well, if that's the way they feel about it, it looks like it's up to you, me and Simon, Clay. When school's out, I'll load off the rifles in your rack. We might be short of manpower, but we're sure going to have some firepower.
- Clay McCord: Folks are always tellin' kids what's right. No reason why it shouldn't work the other way for a change.
- Jenkins: We got scared, but we're not scared now. We're ready to fight to keep you here.
- Alden: We had no right in breaking that contract with you in the first place.
- Clay McCord: You're still a teacher here.
- Mary Willis: Thank you.
- Marshal Simon Fry: Amazin' to find out how much you don't know soon as you start teachin' others what they oughta know.

- Marshal Simon Fry: It's your town and there's. It's better for you to defend it by yourselves... even if it ain't written in the book of statutes.
