THE DETECTIVES – Little Girl Lost - 1960

This one is episode 24 from the 97 episode run of, THE DETECTIVES. This series starred Robert Taylor and ran between 1959 and 1962. The first two seasons ran at a half hour and the last season had a runtime of an hour. The series followed the detective squad in a big city precinct. Cast regulars included, Mark Goddard, Russell Thorson, Tige Andrews, Lee Farr and Adam West. Robert Taylor headlines as Police Captain, Matt Holbrook.

The Police are called in when a 6 year old girl goes missing. Patrol cops figure the girl just wandered off to see friends or the like. That changes quickly when a note asking for 15 hundred in ransom is found. The Detectives, led by Robert Taylor are called to the scene. They start an immediate search for the girl and call in all the usual suspects etc. The also notify the FBI since kidnapping is a Federal beef.

The girl, Eileen Chesis, has been grabbed up by out of work and needing a buck, Rusty Lane. Lane only needs 15 hundred to get him even till he can get a job. The Police, wonder about the low ransom demand themselves. They figure it must be someone new or desperate for cash. Lane contacts Chesis's mother, Eileen Ryan, about the time and place for the cash drop. The Police now catch a break when Lane is seen dropping the girl off on a mountain highway by several passing motorists.

The Police put the grab on Lane when he arrives to get the money. Lane plays it cool and denies knowing anything about the girl or kidnapping. The Police are also having no joy in finding the girl. It seems she wandered off into the woods to look at a chipmunk. Needless to say she gets lost and wanders deeper into the woods.

Night is approaching and the temp is dropping below zero. Taylor and the boys "lean" heavy on Lane for the exact locale where he left the girl. "If she dies out in the dark, it will be a murder beef!" Taylor drills into him.

Lane folds and takes them to the spot. Everyone grabs a flashlight and starts searching. An hour later the girl is found crying for her mother. She is whisked home to her mother. Lane is whisked to jail for an extended visit.

A pretty decent episode, that has a fair amount of tension involved, even if the violence factor is at a minimum.
