Arthur Pearson was a newspaper publisher who was blinded by glaucoma. In 1915, he founded The Blinded Soldiers and Sailors Care Committee, later renamed St. Dunstan's (and now known as Blind Veterans UK). Its mission was to provide vocational training for invalided servicemen, enabling them to be more independent and productive. Ian Fraser was blinded in the Battle of the Somme. Pearson contacted him, inviting him to St. Dunstan's. When Pearson died in 1921, the 24-year-old Fraser was chosen to succeed him as chairman, a position he held for 52 years. He was elected an MP, and also served as a governor of the BBC.
