A Sad Tale Of A Brutish-But-Sensitive Monster Of The Midway
When all is said-and-done, this was kind of a sad profile.
This program, in part, exposes how athletes were mistreated - shot up with cortisone time after time after time because not playing was fulfilling one's contract or wasn't macho. Dick Butkus, one of the toughest football players ever, was a victim of this, as told in this story. It just makes you shake your head in disgust.
Considered an "animal" on the playing field - and if you saw Butkus playing linebacker for the Chicago Bears in the mid '60s to early '70s, you know how violent and tough he was - the "monster" was anything but at home, being a good husband and a good father.....and a shockingly-sensitive man who you still see today doing a number of television commercials.
Butkus was an admitted "brute," no doubt, but a complex and very interesting individual. The profile on this program of him, with interesting comments from some teammates like Doug Buffone and rivals like Charlie Sanders, made this an entertaining episode of "Sports Century."
