- Ray's annoying cousin Gerard is hired by Marie to help Ray write his book. Ray's entire family starts to see that Ray has many of the same annoying traits as Gerard. Ray decides to work on Gerard while trying to make himself feel better.
- When Ray Barone (Ray Romano) hires his overwhelmingly annoying cousin Gerard (played by Fred Stoller) to assist him, and Debra (Patricia Heaton) points out how alike the two men are, Ray is mortified. When Ray confronts his family to refute Debra's findings, he realizes that he's just made a bad situation worse.
- Ray is writing a sports book and Debra tells Marie that Ray needs help to get organized. Marie suggests Cousin Gerard. Ray hates Gerard as he has a lot of allergies and a poor sense of balance and spends more time at the hospital then at home. Marie says that Gerard is much better now and that she owes his mother. Ray is not convinced but Marie plays the emotional blackmail card and says that it is the one thing that Ray could do for her while she is still alive. When Ray capitulates, it turns out Gerard was already in the house and Marie invites him to Ray's basement.
Ray's cousin Gerard (Fred Stoller) tries to help him write a book but ends up annoying the entire family. Gerard has to sit as sometimes his legs give out unexpectedly. Gerard is bothered by the fumes of the highlighter Ray has given him, when Ray asks him to proofread the portion of the book he had already written. He is constantly complaining about everything and keeps taking pity on himself. Gerard gets a stain on his shirt. Gerard reads the book out loud while proofreading and hence Ray is not able to work on anything else. Although Gerard does find a few typos in Ray's book.
Ray tells Debra that Gerard keeps complaining about everything in his nasal, whiny voice. Ray can't get any work done, and has something negative to say about everything, even if Ray is complementing him. Debra points out that Gerard is very similar to Ray and even their heads are of a similar shape. Ray is alarmed by this and realizes that Debra is right. Debra tries to correct herself that Ray and Gerard are from the same family, and hence are bound to sound similar and have the same mannerisms.
Gerard stays at Marie's. He says that he has been in hospitals for 4 years out of the last 12. Marie finds him mopey. Gerard pees a lot. Frank and Marie want Gerard out of their house and want to know how soon Ray will be completing his book. Frank says that Gerard has no zest for life and Robert calls him a loser.
Ray asks his family if they find him annoying, and they all kind of agree with Debra and say that they have just got used to him. Robert says that while Ray is annoying, the family has just developed a tolerance for him. Ray decides to fire Gerard, as Gerard's presence is the only thing reminding the family about how similar Ray is to him.
Debra tells Ray to change his habits, but Ray tries to change Gerard instead. Ray talks to Gerard and says that if he is not happy with himself, he should work on changing his habits. Ray tries to teach Gerard to smile, make eye contact, and how to stand and walk. Ray asks Gerard not to be too negative all the time. Ray is shocked when Gerard calls him annoying. Gerard quits and leaves.
Ray goes to work on Robert. He says that while Robert has his own place, he is always over at Marie's which is annoying. Every time he takes a bite out of food, he touches it with his chin. Ray runs away after he calls Amy annoying.
