Funniest episode

Warning: Spoilers
I've seen them all and if I had to choose just one this would be my favorite episode. Debra encourages Marie to take a sculpture class and brings home her first work, an abstract sculpture. When the sculpture is first unveiled Ray is the first one to think he knows what it looks like. Then he asks Debra if it doesn't look a little to "ladylike". Robert thinks it looks familiar too until Ray whispers in his ear his theory. His reaction was the funniest yet. Marie still sees it as a abstract and Frank says "I don't know what the hell this is but I love it". To the surprise of Ray and Debra, the sculpture is a gift to them they don't know what to do with it. When Marie suggests they put it in the their bedroom they say "we don't like art in the bedroom" "Too high fa-lu-tin." When two nuns show up to pick up the sculpture the laughs continue. Without realizing it Marie has created a work of art which greatly resembles female genitalia. When one of the nuns whispers in her ear about the subject matter she is completely shocked. After giving the sculpture a fresh look Marie says "oh my god, I'm a lesbian" The final scene is the best with Frank at a church gallery staring at the sculpture as he has throughout the episode. A janitor walks in and says " if you ask me I think it looks like" and then he whispers the rest into Franks ear. The episode ends with the Frank finally seeing it and saying "holy crap"

Based on true life inspiration

Show creator Phil Rosenthal and I grew up in the same town in a Rockland County, NY and were friendly acquaintances. He was always a very funny guy to be around. One day our city fathers erected a statue and placed it at a prominent corner of the courthouse grounds. Many were oblivious to the sculpture's resemblance to women's anatomy. When someone finally mentioned it, suddenly you could not unsee it. It still stands, but I'm told it has been turned slightly to less obvious.

Funny, But It's 'Raymond' After Dark
ksdilauri15 May 2020
This 'Raymond' episode, like most others, is brilliantly acted and has the traditional 10-star-quality writing (Marie's reaction when she realizes what the statue looks like is genius.) It loses a couple points for pushing the vulgarity factor just a bit too far for a prime-time show. It's amazing that the CBS censors let it by in the 1990's.

Unusual but good
twanster-9765524 April 2020
It's a funny episode, it's not like most the other episodes as this one has more of an adult theme to it, given what the sculpture is mistaken for.. What's really annoying is that channel 4 in the UK don't air this episode. We can only watch the reruns of this show on channel 4 and they won't play this episode.

The UK doesn't show this episode
twanster-113 January 2020
I saw this once and it's good. Not as good as the other episodes because the I think they went abit to far with the tone, especially given this is a family show and features children too.. The UK doesn't air this episode and even tho it does have some funny moments it really isn't memorable. It seems rushed. As tho it was made as a joke or gag.

Tasteless

So many comedies these days seem to feature way too many sexual references and I was hoping the wonderful show Everybody Loves Raymond would not stoop to that level but unfortunately they chose to with this episode. I saw this episode only once and I didn't even watch the whole thing cause I was so disgusted. I change the channel whenever I see that it's this episode. I fail to see the humor in a statue of a woman's private area. There are much funnier and more cleverly-written episodes than this one. I will always be a fan of this show but this episode is a black eye on an otherwise hilarious comedy series. I know many people don't share the same opinion and that's fine. I'm just not one of the people that enjoyed this particular episode.
