Warning: Spoilers
This episode is from Season 7 of "Everybody Loves Raymond" and originally aired in February 2003. Debra has gotten involved in various charities and thinks it is Raymond's obligation to participate and give back to the community. Raymond initially doesn't want any part of it. But Debra gives him the guilt trip and he reluctantly agrees to go volunteer at the hospital one night per week.

When Ray arrives at the hospital, he checks in at the nurses station, where a nurse walks by and plops a bag of blood on the counter. He tries to make conversation, and then a couple more bags get dropped off, and his knees start buckling. He eventually ends up on the floor, and the nurses help him over to a seat.

He eventually recovers and proceeds to start visiting patients to "cheer them up". The first lady he visits is quite cantankerous and funny. She looks like she's sleeping and Ray's not sure she is even conscious. He gets really close to her face. The patient says "if this is the death angel, I'm ready!" This startles Ray and he quickly says "No". The lady then tells him "Then you could use a mint". He tries to get her to take her pills but she's not cooperative. When she finds out he's a sports writer and sits in press boxes, she reveals she's a big sports fan and has never been in a press box. He says she can't go unless she takes her medicine. She proceeds to call him a "tricky white man".

Ray gets friendly with other patients and they really starts enjoying his visits. He starts to feel like a mini-celebrity, and starts visiting the hospital 2-3/week. It starts to interfere with Debra's charity work and she doesn't like that Ray can't help her around the house. When she talks to Ray about, he starts telling her how much he enjoys it, the patients give them food from their gift baskets and make him feel important, etc. Debra is shocked and slams Ray for doing the charity work for his own ego, and not to help other people.

Meanwhile, the next time Ray shows up at the hospital, there is someone else entertaining the patients in the activity room. It's Robert and his ventriloquist dummy "Timmy the traffic cop". The patients think Robert is hilarious. Ray is not amused and tries to take over in front of Robert, but the patients boo him. He leaves and goes home. He tell Debra that Robert was jealous of his success at the hospital and is trying to take it over. Debra says he should just quit - and that she could really use his help around the house the anyway. Robert comes over, and let's it out the bag that he only went because Debra ASKED him to go. Ray can't believe Debra set it up - and realizes she did it to make him quit. The show closes with Debra having to entertain the patients herself and is singing a hokey song "When you're smiling, the whole world smiles with you...". The patients are not amused.

This is a pretty funny episode. Robert is pretty hilarious with his ventriloquist dummy and the cantankerous patient adds some extra humor as well. Ray's reaction to the blood bags is also a classic Ray moment!
