Why not "Buffy and Jody"?
gregorycanfield15 September 2021
Why was this episode titled "Buffy," when both Buffy and Jody are introduced here? In any case, the episode very effectively sets up the situation, right up front. Brian Keith portrays a nice man. Bill Davis puts a free bachelor life on hold, just to take in three members of his family. Whether back in 1966 or the present, very few people are "that nice." The love these characters have for each other starts to resonate immediately. Towards the end of the episode, we meet Cissy, as played by Kathy Garver. Perfect casting, if there ever was such a thing. Cissy was genuinely cute, and managed to win my heart, right from the start. Sebastian Cabot as Mr French. The "gentleman's gentleman" was a unique role. This is a great, classic show which has never been equalled.

Hear her cry

Warning: Spoilers
When Uncle Bill Davis comes home from India, his man servant, Mr. French, shows him the front page of a magazine that has his picture on it, being tha he is a famous engineer. During a date, his sister in law drops off Buffy, the daughter of Davis' brother, who passed away with his wife about a year ago. The sister in law makes a comment about how her husband doesn't like Buffy. Then she says Buffy never cries, which was what I found interesting. This woman and her husband don't want the child, obviously, and dumping her off in New York (far, far away) shows their contempt for an orphan. Of course, it's only a make believe show, but still, in those days the contempt is right in our face. Uncle Bill starts off gruff and stern, but after the child imposes a problem, he softens, realizing the hurt the child is feeling. Point: if you're looking for a form of affection or loss, unless your heart is soft, you won't see it. The children eventually come to live with Uncle Bill and they have a harmonious relationship, even Mr. French.
