Season One ends with a cliff-hanger!
Tweekums23 May 2012
Warning: Spoilers
As the first season draws to a close things don't look good for Moya and her crew; they are still among the asteroids hiding from the Peacekeepers... at least most of them are; Rygel has taken a transport pod and is heading for Crais' command carrier. Once there he wants a deal; he will give them Moya, her armed offspring, the prisoners and most importantly John Crichton and the wormhole technology he possesses! His plan has one flaw though; Scorpius is not to be trusted; Crais tells Rygel that he will be killed as soon as Scorpius has what he wants, Crais also says that he himself is doomed to be court-martialled so the two of them escape in the transport and return to Moya... where they don't get a friendly welcome! Their position is no better than before but they do come up with a plan that might help them escape; if it is to work everything must go exactly right or they will be lost. The plan is to distract Scorpius with an attack on his base... the attack goes well but as the episode ends things are looking far from good for the crew; Crichton and D'Argo are floating in space, Aeryn is trying to get to them, Crais has stolen Moya's child and Moya herself has starburst away!

This was a fine end to the first season, which gets the viewer keen to see how their problems will be resolved. There were some nice surprises early on; I knew Rygel was self-serving but I didn't expect him to head off to the Peacekeepers to sell out his shipmates, nor did I expect Crais to leave the peacekeepers; no doubt now he has taken Talyn, as Moya's child has been named, his role in the series will change... for good or for bad it is impossible to say yet. Most of the episode was spent setting thing up for the attack on the base, which while not as action packed as I'd expected was impressive and lead to a great conclusion; I'm certainly looking forward to watching the second season.

People forget Crais' secret Leviathan Program
XweAponX14 October 2021
Warning: Spoilers
So it would seem kind of inconsistent that Crais would suddenly drop his revenge against Crichton angle for a more "understanding" point of view.

But it only appears that way, I assure you.

We know now after watching the whole series that Crais had planned this from the start-

Otherwise it would not have been so easy for him to take control of Talyn and "abscond with the keys to the Porsche" (as Crichton puts it).

Think about it, in short order, Crais asks for asylum, sneaks onto Talyn, and then suddenly he steals daddy's new red Porsche. Wait, what?!

But there is some thing a lot more interesting in here before somebody else also noted that, torture against Rygel using a bathtub would not work, because he is an amphibian. However:

We forget something that is right in front of our eyeballs. As Rygel his bathing, we see a part of his anatomy that we have never seen before.

If somebody is reading this and they have not watched this episode I will say no more. But this is something that is blatant, in the bathtub, and it is hanging over Rygel's head.

We've never seen this piece of Rygel, EVER.

And we never saw it ever again.

What was that? One thing I can say about it, it is very large in proportion to the rest of his body...

And just think while everybody else was picking this episode to pieces because of irrelevancies that are not even really that important, this has been hanging over ours, and Rygel's, HEADS for over 20 years?

I totally invite anybody to explain to me what the bullfrell we were looking at... what was this dren, super-Mivonks?

Somebody tell me, please!

Actually there is a premonition of this coming Hynerian appendage in the episode "the hidden memory"- while Moya is giving birth, she must depressurize the main chamber so that Chiana and Rygel have to cram themselves into a pressure chamber on maintenance bay six. I believe this appendage manifested itself when they were in the pressure tank, Chiana was the recipient of Rygel's use of it. But he distracted her by expelling helium. So this makes then-Captain Crais the only other life form that has ever seen this portion of Rygel, and this was the last episode where that organ was ever revealed. It must be a deep, dark, Hynerian secret.

When you consider Crais' uncharacteristic change of heart, also consider the episode "the way we weren't"- which gives some history to Moya's delicate condition. It was also the first episode without the beautiful music of Subvision, replaced with the standard television music of Guy Gross- it wasn't really that bad, but it wasn't as good as Subvision.

I'm sorry but this was a very inconsistent episode
marat147 April 2019
Warning: Spoilers
First of all, its my first time watching and I like the show so far. But there were so many illogical instances that I had to write a review. This 8.3 score suggest it was one of the best episode of the season, but it was one of the worst.

  • The whole first season is about Crais' bloodthirsty, irrational revenge chase on Crichton. And yet in a supposedly emotional scene (when Crichton cries... oh god), Crais confesses that he understands now that it was an accident, and that he became more concerned with his career. For 21 episodes he did nothing but sacrifice everything (among his career) to kill Crichton so what on earth is he talking about?
  • Almost everybody on deck consider Crais their mortal enemy, Aeryn even left him to die in agony 2 episodes ago, but suddenly they trust him so well that they let him roam free aboard, even made him a little meal. He could've kill any of them with his bare hands (as he did with his officer), but somehow they decided not to put him in a cell. Horrible writing.
  • Chiana who is a seductress and a thief with little morality feels obliged to make everybody their favorite meal. I can neither believe that the Chiana I know from previous episodes knows how to make Michelin star quality dishes nor she cares to work for what it seems like a whole day to cater to everybodys wishes.
  • The whole kamikaze plot feels very forced from the beginning, it screams that the writers wanted an emotional ending to the season. It doesnt work. Also why on earth wants D'Argo to go on the suicide mission, when only Crichton was required to be on the kamikaze ship? They could've put Crais in that ship, restrict him and autopilot the ship into the oil reserves.
  • I was confident that Rygel had an elaborate plan, but it turns out he was simply trying to sell the crew for his freedom. In previous similar situations where it seemed that he was selfish, it turned out that he had the best intentions for the crew and he was smart. He is very stupid and bigger villain than Crais in this episode.

So pretty much every character is inconsistent with their former self, and the plot is very weak. I will watch the remaining of the show, but I sure hope the writers wont do another Family Ties.
