Who's to blame
mitchrmp2 November 2012
Well, poor Bud and Hap seem to have gotten most of the blame on this one, but I think Flipper should hold title to part of it since he's the one who found the coin in the first place. Hap and Bud together gives the Warden gray hair, I'm sure. Hap seems to always get Bud into trouble! This is no exception!

A stolen coin (Flipper's doing), a declaration of the value of the coin (Bud's doing), a lot of fighting, a treasure chest, and a sinking row boat all make this episode very interesting to say the least! Of course my favorite part is when Po and Sandy discover who they are rescuing...

The episodes are still going strong!

The Great Coral Key Park Hype
wes-connors26 September 2007
"Rasmussen School For Skin Diving" graduates earn their diploma by diving for coins; one is a relatively rare Spanish doubloon, which is found by Flipper, and given to Bud (Tommy Norden). "Hap" Gorman (Andy Devine) tells Bud about his collection of precious coins. Since it's Sandy (Luke Halpin)'s birthday, and Bud would like $25.95 to buy him a gift, he takes the doubloon to the "Rare Coins" shop; but, the proprietor offers him only $3.00. Dorothy Wilson (as Joanne Thomas) is concerned about Coral Key's slow tourist trade; she buys the coin for $7.00, then hypes its value. Soon, the Ricks (Brian Kelly)'s park is swarming with treasure huntersÂ…

Writers must not have been able to "focus" on this episode - there isn't much point to the "Rasmussen School For Skin Diving", and Sandy's birthday is barely mentioned. This is the last series appearance by semi-regular Andy Devine, always delightful as H.P. "Hap" Gorman.

Bud and Hap
wrxsti543 July 2014
Warning: Spoilers
Not a good combination - Hap's endless tall tales and Bud's imagination although the mischief here was kicked along by an opportunistic publicity officer for Coral Key.

A dive school teacher throws a worn and common Spanish doubloon overboard for his dive students to find but Flipper brings it to Bud who, seeking money for Sandy's birthday present, takes it to a Rare Coin dealer. He tells him its worth only $3 but the publicity manager buys it from Bud for $7. When Bud alludes to Spanish treasure, next thing there's an article in the paper and the area is swamped with hundreds of boats. Porter and Sandy have to manage the mass of people and their tension.

Bud gets wind that he's the source of the rumor and takes off with Hap to prove that there is indeed treasure right at the time that Porter remonstrates with the publicity lady who in turns indicates that Bud was the source of the rumor. Hap manages to hole his dingy on rocks out in the bay marooning them on a rock where they find a treasure chest but it's just a store promotion. A Coastguard chopper sees them and radios in to Sandy on the launch and he and Porter head out to rescue people described by Porter as foolish only to find Bud and Hap! Porter's not happy and for their penance they have to clean up the foreshore trash generated by the rush of treasure seeking visitors while Porter and Sandy watch smiling. Porter agrees to let Hap off trash duty if he stops telling tall tales for a week and Sandy thanks Bud for his new water skis.

Funny line: Porter to Bud - "as for you junior capitalist if I ever catch you selling rare coins again...", Coolest shot: About 1/3 of the way into the episode, Sandy and Bud race from the house in just their cutoffs as fast as they can in bare feet across the gravel turning area and along the dock and dive into the lagoon and say a cheery "Hi Flipper" as they join him in the water! That one scene captures the essence of the show - the relationship between Flipper and Sandy and Bud.
