Washington comes to the Keys - both episodes
wrxsti5425 June 2014
Warning: Spoilers
This is a great episode. A visit by Congresswoman Browning, prompted by a letter about taxes from Hap Gorman (Andy Devine), seems to be about whether Coral Key Park is a boondoggle. When she thanks Hap for his public spirit, Bud and Sandy feel betrayed. Bud dreams of all sorts of dastardly fates for her from rubbing a brass lamp including crabs, alligators and skunks. Turns out Bud didn't need to dream of turning Browning off, Flipper steals her hat and then she falls in the water ending a not so good first day as she decides to second Flipper to the navy! Porter speaks his mind to Mrs. Browning over the phone and then he and Sandy have to retrieve Bud from the cave he run away to with Flipper.

Barbara Feldman (of "Get Smart" fame) makes a cameo as the Congresswoman's secretary Erma and she seems to like Coral Key and Flipper and tries to allay Sandy's fears of a possible shutdown arising from the visit.

The next day when the Congresswoman arrives for an underwater tour, Porter is away on an emergency, so the boys take her out in the skiff. Sandy shows her the marvels of the underwater park until a shark shows up. Sandy sends Flipper to deal to the shark. Meanwhile Porter calls to warn of an incoming hurricane. Sandy and Mrs Browning are oblivious underwater as Bud realizes the engine on the skiff is broken as the wind rises and it drifts far away from the surfaced divers. Flipper tows the skiff to meet them.

Flipper tries to find Porter while the boys row into the storm as Mrs. Browning bails. On the way Sandy extols the virtues of the park and Mrs. Browning admits she has some thinking to do and announces, as she is leaving, that not only will the park stay open but the concept needs to be expanded and she credits Bud and Sandy for her change of heart!

Funny line of the show: when it appears the delegation features a woman Congressman, Sandy is surprised and Bud asks "is that legal?" In today's PC world, no scriptwriter would dare say that!

Nasty Lady!
mitchrmp31 October 2012
Once again, Flipper's life in the open ocean and as the Ricks' pet is threatened, but this time it's the government that's attempting to take the dolphin away from his family.

Porter Ricks is the ever faithful ranger doing the right thing while protecting his sons and putting their lives first. Sandy is the mature one (often too mature in my opinion) and stands up for his father. Bud is the protector of the dolphin, and when his pet's livelihood is threatened, Bud takes off. His father is very understanding about the situation, though...

The Congresswoman is a piece of work that makes me want to cringe. She needs a good reality check on how hard the blue (or in this case brown) collared people work. Perhaps in the second part she'll get that...

Coral Key Raises Taxpayer Anger
wes-connors26 September 2007
Coral Key is rocked by the arrival of a Congressional Delegation: Maggie Hayes (as Congresswoman Helen E. Browning) and her secretary Barbara Feldon (as Erna Morley). The congresswoman thinks Coral Key Park may be a "boondoggle" - or, as Sandy (Luke Halpin) explains to Bud (Tommy Norden), "When the government spends money on something it doesn't really need." Ricks (Brian Kelly) fears the congresswoman may decide to close the park. The Ricks' are surprised to learn Ms. Hayes has been invited by lovable old "Hap" Gorman (Andy Devine), who only wanted his taxes lowered (which the Park's closure would accomplish, by the way). The Ricks family must convince the congresswoman Coral Key is worth taxpayers' money, or the will have to move, and lose Flipper.

This is the first of several multi-part "Flipper" episodes; though this, and the follow-up, are also serviceable as "stand alone" stories - there is no "cliffhanger" ending, and the stories are only identifiable as linked when viewed in succession. Barbara Feldon (later, Agent 99 on "Get Smart") is most notable as secretary Erna; she doesn't have all that much to do, but is amazingly expressive! Devine's delightful "Hap" will figure more prominently in the next, concluding installment.

***** Lady and the Dolphin, pt 1 (12/5/64) Hollingsworth Morse ~ Margaret Hayes, Brian Kelly, Luke Halpin
