Third times the charm! much better effort this time around.

Warning: Spoilers
Episode three has High school track star Chris losing her edge and is willing to do anything to get back her "Killer Instinct", so she can live up to the legacy of her deceased mother who was a former Olympic track star. With the help of her coach, Chris is given a neck less talisman that when she thinks hard enough things begin to come true, including her winning her races. Chris begins to learn both the ecstasy of victory, and the agony of defeat, on both her opponents and eventually herself as well.

Veteran Mick Garris who has mostly been known in his career for creating "Masters of Horror" along with directing several low budget TV adaptations of Stephen King novels. Really gets the series back on track with this episode. For starters there's actually a plot here this time around. While the story still doesn't have anything to do with Freddy other then using him as a crypt keeper style narrator, his goofy outlooks on the tales are charming if not a little goofy. Still the cast does a nice job with eventual standout Lori Petty being the best thing here, and speaking on nice jobs this is the first episode so far to have a good amount of red stuff, including someone getting there fingers cut off and and another guy getting his fist run threw him with guts and stuff coming from the other end. My only real complaint is the talisman is built up a lot during the first half of the story only to not be really used at all during the second half. It's still fun though and the overall twist is fairly nice and satisfying. Overall best effort yet from the series.

Interesting enough.

Warning: Spoilers
I'm slightly disappointed. I went into these Freddy's Nightmares episodes thinking that Freddy would be the main character in every episode. And in the two I've watched. He only appears at the start and at the end. It's really not A Nightmare On Elm Street at all. It's more The Twilight Zone, particularly this episode. I'll say that this episode is far better than 'It's A Miserable Life', because unlike that one, this wasn't boring and actually had a plot. The jealous sporting competitor story isn't new but I thought it was interesting how they switched the protagonist halfway through. With that being said, they done the exact same thing in the last episode but it was pulled of better here. I was literally shocked when Chris died and I was not expecting all the blood considering that the last episode was bloodless and this was broadcast on TV in the late 80s.

The acting was also a major step up from the last episode. I knew I somewhat recognised Chris from something and then it clicked that I knew her as Lolly from Orange Is The New Black. The girl who played Nickie was okay but really wasn't great. I liked the ending with Nickie going completely mad and killing Jay. It was pretty twisted, which is the least the series could be considering it doesn't feature Freddy Krueger. Also, are these episodes considered canon in the movie timeline. Because it seems odd that throughout these, maybe 50 episodes, that all of these teenagers would die in the space of about 2 years and no one bats an eyelid. It could make sense for Freddy's Dead, considering it says that all teenagers are dead, but it doesn't really fit in with the other movies in the franchise.

not bad but still missing things

The third episode of season one and available on the Blu Ray box of the Nightmare On Elm Street franchise. This was much better then the other episode available on the box and eventually got a real story.

It do has some red stuff in it and the story is coherent but again it has nothing to do with Freddy Krueger. In fact, short stories like this should have a surprising end like in Tales From The Crypt but it just hasn't got any. You are left with a bitter feeling. Suddenly Freddy is there and you think, what the hell? And even the things Freddy says doesn't make any sense.

The directing was okay, Mick Garris did it and it all looked great. You better watch Masters Of Horror created by Mick. It's much better and do has a horror overflow.

On Your Mark, Get Set, Suffer!

Killer Instinct takes us into the competitive world of high school athletics, where Chris Gordon, a once-promising 100-meter sprinter, faces a sudden downfall. After losing her edge and being dropped from the team, Chris is given a second chance by her coach, who gifts her a magical pendant that once belonged to her late mother. With the pendant's mysterious powers, Chris finds herself breaking records and regaining her former glory. However, as the pendant's capabilities extend beyond just enhancing her athletic performance, Chris must confront the dark side of her desires and the potential for great evil.

Directed by Mick Garris, known for his work on horror projects and adaptations, Killer Instinct marks a step up from the previous episodes in the Freddy's Nightmares series. While Freddy Krueger's involvement remains minimal, acting as a crypt keeper-like narrator, the episode introduces a more coherent plot. The story unfolds with the classic rivalry between Chris and her competitor, Nickie Ryan, and takes an unexpected twist when the focus shifts from Chris to Nickie.

Lori Petty shines in her role as Chris, infusing her character with a mix of determination and vulnerability. This performance stands out in comparison to the earlier episodes' acting. The narrative structure evolves beyond the one-dimensional storytelling of the first two episodes, offering a more engaging and intriguing plotline.

What sets Killer Instinct apart is the introduction of gore and horror elements that were lacking in the previous installments. The episode features scenes of severed fingers, bloody violence, and a decapitation that add a much-needed dose of tension and horror. While not particularly frightening, the gory moments enhance the overall experience.

Mick Garris's direction elevates the visual appeal of the episode, and the pacing feels more controlled compared to earlier entries. The story's unpredictability benefits from the switch in focus from Chris to Nickie, and the twist ending provides a sense of satisfaction that was missing in previous episodes.

However, Killer Instinct still falls short in some areas. Freddy's minimal presence and the lack of a direct connection to the A Nightmare on Elm Street franchise continue to be disappointments. The episode could have benefited from more creative use of the magical pendant's powers and a deeper exploration of its origins.

In the end, Killer Instinct offers a more enjoyable viewing experience compared to its predecessors in Freddy's Nightmares. With an engaging plot, improved acting, and the introduction of gore, it manages to capture the essence of horror anthology storytelling while still leaving room for improvement in terms of tying it to the Freddy Krueger mythology.

One of the better episodes, which isn't saying much really.

Warning: Spoilers
Freddy's Nightmares: Killer Instinct starts at Springwood high where 100 meter sprinter Chris Gordon (Lori Petty) is dropped from the team by her Coach (Lee Kessler), Chris's rival Nickie Ryan (YvetteNipar) is now the star athlete. Having lost her mom recently Coach Wilson decides to give Chris another chance & gives her a good luck pendant that Chris's late mom used to look at before every race she ran, however Chris soon realises that the pendant is magical & grants wishes & Chris breaks Springwood high's 100 meter record but while the magical pendant has the potential for great good it also has the potential for great evil...

Episode three from season one of Freddy's Nightmares this was directed by Mick Garris (director of Critters 2: The Main Course (1988), Psycho IV: The Beginning (1990), Sleepwalkers (1992) & TV stuff like The Shining (1997) mini-series & episodes of Tales from the Crypt & Msters of Horror) & is probably one of the better episodes from this rather poor series, it's not brilliant but a better than usual story & a bit of gore do help it along. The basic way the story unfolds is very similar to the previous episode It's a Miserable Life in which there are two main character's with one being the main focus who is then killed off about halfway through & then the other character takes over becoming the focus. The plot about a magic pendant is alright, it's not brilliant & there's no real back-story & again the lack of any big twist is disappointing, these horror anthology stories live or die by their twist endings & so far Freddy's Nightmares just ain't got them. Killer Instinct just feels like a short horror film than anything else, it's all a bit predictable & the constant visions & dreams which character's 'wake up' from become annoying.

The main thing that saves Killer Instinct is the presence of some gore, there are some severed fingers, spraying blood, a strangely filmed decapitation & a few zombies. Not really scary it's hard to get frightened or intimidated by a girl being terrorised by an out of control running machine, I mean why doesn't she just step off the thing? Lori Petty has worked steadily ever since this but will be best remembered for staring in the awful mega flop Tank Girl (1995) while founder & CEO of New Line Cinema Robert Shaye has a small cameo as a Minister at a funeral. Freddy Krueger pops up a few times & says a few one-liners but nothing that memorable in this one.

Killer Instinct is alright, it's watchable thanks to a bit of gore & a short run time but the story is just so weak & a none event of a twist ending just kills it dead.
