- Micki's young nephew befriends the reanimated corpse of a boy residing in the local haunted house.
- Micki's nephew J.B. comes to stay with Micki and Ryan, but they're too busy trying to recover the Shard of Medusa to realize that J.B. has made a new friend: Ricky, who lives in a "haunted house" by himself and needs to feed on grown-ups from time to time to keep himself alive.—Gislef
- The Past
A couple, Marjorie and Howard Harper, break into a cemetery at night. They sneak into the mausoleum of Richard Radwell, who died in 1891 at the age of 12, and Howard carefully lifts Radwell's mummified corpse up and carries it out of the tomb. As she goes, Howard says that they're taking "Ricky" home.
At their home, Howard places Ricky into a child's coffin as Marjorie looks on. The doorbell rings, and Marjorie goes to answer it. It's the nanny, Miss Ransokoo, who answered the couple's ad. Howard greets Xxx and Marjorie tells her husband that the nanny has no family or friends, and recently arrived in the U.S. Howard says that the nanny will be just right for their Ricky, leads her into Ricky's bedroom, and waits outside while closing the door behind her.
The nanny approaches the child's coffin, and the now-fully-fleshed Ricky sits up and attacks her. The couple stand out in the hallway and smile as the nanny screams. Howard says that it's over now and soon Ricky will be all theirs. The door opens and Ricky--now fully human--comes out.
The Present
Artist DeJager sketches a model holding up a stone, and says that the stone--the Shard of Medusa--is her inspiration. The model complains that the Shard is heavy and her muscles are starting to cramp. DeJager sketches the model in agony. The model says that she can't breathe and wonders what's happening to her.
Ryan pulls up outside the rented studio, and he rings the bell.
The model says that she can't move, drops the Shard, and screams. DeJager calmly continues sketching.
Ryan gets no response and discovers that the door is locked.
DeJager finishes her sketch, picks up the Shard, and tells the model that she's made a great contribution to her work. She plunges the sharp end of the shard into the model's back.
Ryan runs up the back fire escape.
The model turns into a life-size stone statue. Once DeJager leaves, Ryan arrives on the roof, sees the petrified model through the skylight, and realizes that he's too late.
The next day at the shop, Ryan tells Micki that he overheard DeJager make a sitting appointment with the model, but he arrived too late to stop DeJager and get the Shard. Micki prepares to go to be DeJager's next model, since she only sketches females. As they go, they find a young boy, J.B., waiting at the door. J.B. is Micki's nephew, and his mother has left him off with Micki. Ryan complains that Micki's sister keeps having them act as babysitters, and J.B. says that the last time his mother left with a boyfriend, she left her son at a hotel. Micki takes pity on him and let J.B. stay at the shop, and asks Ryan to keep the boy busy.
Micki brings out a bicycle that Ryan and Jack just rebuilt. J.B. isn't impressed and says that her mother just bought him a new bike. She tells J.B. to ride in the park while she and Ryan are out. J.B. rides off, and Ryan tells Micki to talk to her sister. He figures J.B. made up a story about his mother buying him a bike, and the cousins to leave to arrange Micki's sitting with DeJager.
J.B. rides to the park on his new bike, and comes across Jimmy and several other buys doing stunts on their newer bikes. J.B. stops to watch them, and the boys come over and make fun of J.B. One of them, Dean, suggests that they "check out J.B". Ricky watches the boys from inside the house.
Ryan and Micki go to the art gallery where DeJager is displaying her sculptures. DeJager never sold anything before she got the Shard. Micki approaches the artist and compliments her as the "greatest sculpture alive".
The boys have J.B. ride around and "show them what he's got", and then tell him that he has to prove his courage to join their gang.
DeJager invites Micki to come to her studio that night and gives Micki her address.
The gang takes J.B. to the nearby house, and say that it's haunted and most of the people go in and don't come out. Ricky watches them from inside the house, while Dean tells J.B. that all he has to do is get one of Ricky's toys and bring it out, and then J.B. is in the gang. J.B. insists that he's not scared and goes in, then goes upstairs to Ricky's room. He sees a toy gyroscope spinning on the floor, and kneels down to pick it up and look at it. A voice from the shadows asks J.B. if J.B. will be his friend, and J.B. runs out in fear while holding the gyroscope.
J.B. yells to the gang that he heard the "ghost" haunting the house, and discovers that the boys are gone and took J.B. bike with them. The door of the house closes behind J.B., and he looks up to see a figure moving behind the shuttered windows. The figure watches J.B. run off and then retreats into the shadows.
At the shop, Micki tells Ryan to be ready when she grabs the Shard. J.B. runs in and says that he saw the ghost, and admits that the gang stole the bike Ryan gave him. Ryan figures that J.B. is making up a story, and J.B. storms off complaining that no one ever believes him. Later, Micki checks on J.B. in the "guest" room. She says that she and Ryan have to go out, and she left some supper for her nephew. J.B. insists that he's fine, and Micki says that she wishes she could make J.B.'s mother act more like a mother. Once Micki leaves, J.B. starts the gyroscope and puts it on the edge of his bed, and watches it spin.
That night, J.B. goes back to the house with a flashlight and breaks in. He calls to who he assumes is Ricky, and Ricky confronts and greets J.B. Ricky asks J.B. if he wants to play, and says that his parents won't bother them and he knew J.B. would come back.
Micki arrives at DeJager's studio and the artist lets her in.
Ricky and J.B. play foosball, and Ricky asks J.B. why he ran away. J.B. says that he thought Ricky was a ghost, and they knock the ball out of the game and under a nearby basement door. Ricky stops J.B. from going after it, and says that J.B. can't go into the next room but doesn't give an explanation. As he leads J.B. back to the foosball table, Ricky hears the sounds of horses neighing and asks if J.B. can hear it. J.B. doesn't hear it, and Ricky hears a man yelling his name, calling him "a little bastard". Ricky imagines the man slapping him and winces in pain, and J.B. says that he'll look after him because they're friends.
DeJager confirms that Micki didn't tell anyone she is posing for artist, and says that they'll begin with a sketch. She says that her work explores pain and has Micki pose for her. The artist has Micki undress and then takes out the Shard and says that it's her inspiration. Micki opens the window, claiming that she wants some fresh air. DeJager talks about the legend of Medusa, and gives Micki the Shard to hold . Micki drops it out the window to the waiting Ryan, and then runs out after a brief struggle with DeJager.
J.B. administers to Ricky, who says that he's sick or something. He talks about how his mother blames him for his dad leaving, and Ricky says that his father used to beat him. Ricky invites J.B. to stay so they can have fun all the time, and admits that his parents are dead. His nose bleeds, and Ricky asks J.B. to call a drug store and send someone over with medicine. J.B. agrees and leaves, and Ricky looks at himself in a mirror and whispers to himself for J.B. to hurry.
Ricky hears the horses again, and has a flashback to when he lived in the house as a child. His father barges in and beats Ricky for disobeying him.
A delivery man arrives from the drug store and knocks at the front door of Ricky's house. The man goes in and hears Ricky crying upstairs. He goes up the stairs, following the noise, and enters Ricky's room. The delivery man finds the child's coffin, and Ricky slashes the delivery man, crawls out of the coffin, and advances on the man. Ricky echoes what his father told him about "taking what's coming to him" and charges at the delivery man, who falls over the balustrade to his death. Ricky then drags the man's body into the basement that he wouldn't let J.B. enter earlier.
Micki and Ryan return to the shop with the Shard, and finds DeJager there with J.B. She points out that Micki left her jacket behind and she got the shop's address from them. DeJager tells Ryan to give the Shard to the boy while holding a sharpened chisel to J.B.'s throat, and Ryan does so. The artist uses J.B. as a shield to get to the door, and then leaves with the Shard.
DeJager drives away before Ryan can stop her, and J.B. says that he let DeJager because she was waiting for him when he got back from Ricky's. Ryan doesn't believe J.B.'s story about his friend "the ghost", and J.B. tells Micki that Ricky doesn't have parents and he stayed with him because Ricky was sick. The boy says that they don't want him there, and Micki is just like his mother. The boy goes up to the guest room, and Ryan apologizes to Micki for overreacting. Ryan goes after DeJager while Micki stays with J.B.
The next morning, J.B. goes to play with Ricky despite Micki making him breakfast. The boy sits down, and Micki asks about Ricky. J.B. says that the gang said Ricky died when his parents were murdered, and that he's not surprised Ricky lives alone because no one looks after J.B. Micki assures him that his mother will settle down eventually, and says that J.B. shouldn't go over to Ricky's because they don't know anything about him. J.B. slips out when Micki's back is turned.
Ricky is cleaning up the delivery man's bloodstains, and J.B. comes in. The older boy says that he's not doing anything, and invites J.B. up to his room to play. J.B. asks if he can stay forever, and Ricky assures him he can and that they're "friends to the end".
At the shop, Micki goes through Lewis' receipts and finds a newspaper article about the apparent murders at Ricky's house. There was blood on the walls, but no trace of Howard, Marjorie, or their 12-year-old son Richard. Micki then finds a letter from Marjorie to Lewis, saying that they need his help. Lewis "blessed them with a son, Ricky, but then the hunger comes across Ricky more than it did at first, and Marjorie worries that something has gone wrong.
The Past
Ricky shoves his "parents" over the balustrade to their deaths.
The Present
In the letter, Marjorie asks Lewis for help "in His service." Micki realizes that the Ricky J.B. referred to is the Ricky in Marjorie's letter.
J.B and Ricky run through the house, playing Hide-and-Seek. Ricky collapses from more head pains, and he makes J.B. say that they're friends until the end. When J.B. does so and says that he'd do anything for Ricky, Ricky asks J.B. to bring somebody there. He turns, the welt from his father's crop on his face, and asks J.B. to make sure no one sees J.B. bring someone to the house.
J.B. runs out and finds a policeman, and says that his friend is at home by himself and was hurt. The cop goes with J.B. to the house, and hears Ricky in his room moaning in pain. When the cop goes into Ricky's room, J.B. follows him. The cop finds the child's coffin, but the lid is closed and the cop goes back out to where J.B. is waiting on the stairs. He comes out and asks J.B. what he's playing at, and Ricky comes out behind him and knocks the cop out.
Ryan calls Micki and says that DeJager is on her way to Europe. Micki tells Ryan that J.B. is in trouble, and two years ago Lewis found a way to give the Harpers a couple using a cursed child's coffin. When a dead child is put in the coffin, it becomes a living child. Micki gives Ryan Ricky's address, and Ryan heads there.
J.B. begs Ricky not to kill the cop, and Ricky says that he has to kill to stay alive. When J.B. continues protesting, Ricky tells him that friends help each other, and insists that he has to kill people. Ricky approaches J.B. and says that his friend can stay there forever. J.B. runs for the door. When Ricky tries to stop him, J.B. punches Ricky, and asks what happens when he becomes a grown-up.
As Ricky starts to revert back to his corpse form, J.B. runs into the basement and falls through the rotting stair boards. The corpses of Ricky's other victims are there, and Ricky arrives.
Micki runs to the house.
J.B. calls for help, and Ricky says that he's coming. The younger boy tells Ricky to leave him alone.
Micki arrives at the house and comes in. J.B. hears her call and calls to her, and Micki follows her nephew's voice and tries to come down the broken stairs. Her nephew warns her about Ricky, and Micki insists that she's not leaving without J.B. Ricky attacks Micki with a piece of pipe, and he beats her unconscious. J.B. tells Ricky to stop, and Ricky insists that none of the grown-ups care. The younger boy begs Ricky not to hurt Micki, saying that Ricky is supposed to be his friend.
The rotting Ricky pauses, then drops the pipe as Micki wakes up. Unfed, Ricky reverts back a skeleton while screaming in pain and anguish, then collapses as J.B. and Micki look on.
The next day at the shop, Ryan checks with the police and tells J.B. that the cop will recover and doesn't remember much. The cousins swear J.B. to secrecy, and Micki tells her nephew that Ricky was murdered a hundred years ago by his father. Micki tells J.B. that he has to give himself to friends, and Ryan invites J.B. to come back and stay with them. He apologizes, saying the cops called and told him that the gang took the bike. Ryan assures J.B. that he's going to have the bike delivered to J.B.'s house, and they shake on their friendship.
