So-so episode
xredgarnetx10 February 2007
One cannot expect every episode of a series to click, and UNDEAD COMIC surely doesn't click. Melinda is confronted by a stand up comic who apparently took his own life. Together, they must sort out the reason why. The beginning, with Melinda wandering into a comedy club on "ghost" night, seems to hold much promise, but that promise quickly faces. If nothing else, several familiar faces populate the "ghost" club, including Katey Sagal, Elaine Hendrix and Mo Gaffney. Even so, the episode verges on the terminally boring. Ah well, you can't win them all. Fortunately, other things are going on in this episode that will lead to much larger payoffs in subsequent episodes. I am not giving this away, however. See for yourself.

A Dud

Warning: Spoilers
In a first year of a series which stood out for the excellence of its scripts, this was one of a few clunkers. It suffers principally from the weak premise that a stand up comic would commit suicide out of envy for the success of his colleague/lover. Unlike other episodes, which provide endings with plot twists, this is pretty predictable from the start. Perhaps the producers recognized this, as it is the only contribution of the script writer, Doug Prochilo, to the series.

The best scene is Mel's after hours trip to the club, where dead comedians congregate. Here we are treated to the presence of the late Steve Landesberg of "Barney Miller" fame. Too bad his cameo was given such meager material. This alone was worth 2 stars. The other goes to Ayisha Tyler, who got some screen time, unlike the last two seasons which would be monopolized by JLH and her boyfriend Jamie Kennedy.

A haunted comedy club: "Am I dead?"
Doylenf21 September 2009
Another lesser entry in this series about a haunted comedy club that Melinda (JENNIFER LOVE HEWITT) stumbles upon on a night out with her friend from the antique shop they both run. Seems the ghost has a way of playing practical jokes that nobody appreciates--and gradually, Melinda learns to know something about his background. How? She enters the club one night when it's supposed to be closed and discovers it patronized by dead members of the club enjoying a typical comedy routine.

What might have made an interesting story--and what gets off to a good start--can't maintain sufficient interest.

The disfigured spirit of the comic who passed over, wants to find out what happened to cause his sudden, violent death. He asks Melinda for help in finding out why he's dead--and what happened. Eventually, they follow his girlfriend to a bridge where she tosses a bottle of champagne into the river below. "This is where it happened," he realizes. "This is where I killed myself." It sounds better than it plays. Once again, the performances are fine but the overall story misses the mark somehow. Not one of the best from this series.

KATEY SAGAL is good as the nightclub owner and JED REES is fine as the undead comic.
