A suspenseful watch.

Marion Grove, friend of Inspector Keen's wife, meets and falls for Robert Carne, the pair marry, but he has a secret, a love of money, and a habit of murdering women.

I really did enjoy this episode, it felt very different. I wouldn't say the first five episodes have been formulaic, far from it, but they have been procedural Police dramas, this one felt very different, I was reminded of The Edgar Wallace Theatre series.

The cast were great, Ray Barrett was excellent as the villain of the piece. Rosemary Leach equally good as the wife and victim, I was reminded of a performance she gave in one of the Edgar Wallace films, in which she also played a wife in danger.

Well paced and very well acted, not so much full of intrigue, this one has you asking, 'when,' when is he going to try and take his chance.

Mostly focused on the characters, we see virtually nothing of Gideon and his family, truly a character story.

Enjoyed, 8/10.

I can't fault this film. The Actors, the scenes, everything is good and I recommend it for people who like intelligent television with that vintage feel. You know the sort of thing I mean: real police uniforms, black cars, deserted roads, lots of fields. My only niggle is that it seems too rushed . Normally Gideon's crimes take place over a couple of days at the most. The action here is supposed to take place over several months and I think it suffers a little. It all seems too rushed and coincidental. Had it been a full length movie then it would have been perfect. But then, they may have had to acknowledge the true source of the story. A thriller called "Lady Killer" by Anthony Gilbert, published in 1951. I'm surprised that Gilbert (real name Lucy Mallison, cousin of the actor Miles Mallison) who died in 1973, did not sue!

Robert Carne is a real charmer who marries ladies for their money.

Unfortunately he never seems to inherit the fortune after they mysteriously die. Somehow bad luck dogs Carne.

Frumpy but wealthy Marion Grove (Rosemary Leach) becomes wife number three.

However DCI Keen's girlfriend is rather suspicious of Carne. When Keen probes further he finds out some disturbing information.

Meanwhile Carne is rather keen to become a widower again.

It is not a very original story and it all takes a little time to get going.

It is a wonder that none of these ladies thought that Carne was just too good to be true.
