Son-in-Law Dearest (#2.23)

Warning: Spoilers
Dorothy's daughter comes to visit. She says that she has great news and everyone thinks this will be an announcement of pregnancy. But turns out that her husband had an affair and she left him. Then Dennis comes and after a conversation Kate decides to stay with him. Dorothy is mad but Sophia tells her to let Kate make her own decisions or she will lose her daughter.

A good and smart episode on how to let your kids make their own decisions and mistakes.

Blanche and Rose watching "I love Lucy" adds to the fun part of the episode. It is especially great to see them laughing when Dorothy is all upset. Just because it was so inappropriate considering that they are such good friends.

Family matters are about to repeat themselves.

Warning: Spoilers
Dorothy isn't too pleased to learn that son-in-law Jonathan Perpich has been cheating on daughter Deena Freeman, having gone through the same thing with husband Stan. She had hoped to hear that she was about to become a grandmother, but is hurt by daughter Kate's announcement of son-in-law Dennis's betrayal. The presence of Herbert Edelman as Stan makes all the hurts of her own marriage come back (especially since he had just recently confessed infidelities that she had not known about), and when Stan admonishes Dennis for his affairs, Dorothy can only look on and shake her head at his hypocrisy. Bea Arthur gives a truly moving performance as she explains to Dennis of how seeing her daughter hurt makes her hurt even more because there's nothing she can really do other than comfort her. Dennis's insistence on calling her "Mother Dorothy" is very funny, reminding me of "The Mothers-in-Law" when Eve Arden's son-in-law insisted on calling her "Mother Hubbard". This is a character revealing moment for Dorothy who is never afraid of showing her vulnerability, but also always prepared to admonish the men in her and her family's lives for hurting them, and always with humor and heart.

Kate arrives for a visit, prompting Stan and Dorothy to assume that her and Dennis are having a baby, unfortunately it turns out to be some marital difficulty.

Like mother, like daughter, Dorothy sees her own daughter making the same mistakes that she did, it makes for quite a touching episodes. There are several funny moments, most of them involve Rose, I loved the scenes where she and Blanche are busy watching Everybody loves Lucy.

'Mother Dorothy, don't call me that, I feel like I should be handing out rice in Calcutta,' that line had me belly laughing.

Series two is a real highlight, every single episode so far has offered something different, something original, and something meaningful, the acting remains fantastic, Getty was a joy.

7/10.
