It's all out war at the bowling lanes when Rose betrays Blanche in an upcoming tournament and Sophia is determined to assert her independence over Dorothy by taking a trip home to Sicily...

"The Competition" is a pretty funny episode with a good plot that manages to involve all four of the girls and give them plenty to do.

"The Competition" has plenty of good points. Rose emerges as the winner of this episode here as her fierce competitive streak makes for some great comedy as does a rare alliance with Sophia. The two of them actually work well together and it Rose the chance to really be funny. Another highlight are the scenes between Estelle Getty and an old flame, played by Ralph Manza.

My main beef is that even though Rose's competitiveness is quite amusing, it doesn't seem to really fit with her personality, especially later. She's usually portrayed as sweet, cheerful, and naive so her anything-to-win competitiveness seems to be at odds with the rest of her character. To their credit, the writers would at least bring out this trait in many later episodes so it becomes easier to accept.

Definitely check this episode out as it is a terrific example of the comedy gold that would result when all four ladies interact. It also shows the real love between Dorothy and Sophia. However, one unfortunate by-product of this episode is that it would lend to the infamous inconsistencies on this show as Sophia's premarital past would change a hundred times over.

A Golden Battle, the talons are out.
Sleepin_Dragon9 November 2022
The annual bowling tournament brings out the competitive side of all four girls, they pair up, and take on one another, the stakes are very high.

I'm just enchanted by this show, the humour, the ladies, the sarcasm, the acting, it just doesn't disappoint.

This feels like the first episode where no one character in particular has been the focus, it's been an equal split, with everyone playing their part.

This time round, I thought Rose delivered the funniest lines, the way she moved from partner to partner was just side splitting. Rose and Sophia, what a formidable, hilarious team.

The scene of the actual match was the standout moment, very funny.

Golden comedy, 8/10.

Rose's addiction to winning!

Warning: Spoilers
Everyone but Sophia is entering the bowling tournament. Rose is tired of being Blanche's partner and dumps her. After Sophia turns down Dorothy's offer to join her, Rose opportunistically asks Dorothy to be her partner. Rose's competitive spirit gets out of control and she dumps Dorothy as well. Sophia wants to borrow money from Dorothy to go on a trip with a former love interest, Augustine Bagatelli. After Dorothy says no, Sophia decides to be Rose's partner and they make a bet. If Sophia's team wins, Sophia gets to go on the trip. If Dorothy wins, Dorothy gets something very precious of Sophia's. I've never been a big fan of bowling, so this was completely silly to me. That being said, this is a really fun episode. It was really unusual, but interesting to see Rose play somebody that is nefarious and shady. Her obsession with winning added a very good dynamic to this episode. She was incorrigible at times! Credit to Betty White for pulling it off. There are genuine laughs with heartwarming moments. Seeing Sophia in love was cute and I enjoyed her romantic storyline. Estelle Getty steals many scenes she's in with some of her stuff. Blanche's sassy attitude was great as well. Dorothy pulls a stunt at the end that will make you smile. She really has a hidden heart of gold. If you like Golden Girls, you'll enjoy this episode.

By the way....Sophia's spaghetti sauce looked delicious! It made me crave spaghetti

The three faces of Rose.

Warning: Spoilers
Sweet, naive, competitive. That's Rose for ya! Like later episodes where she's after the award for being the most giving in charitable causes, here, she's after a bowling league trophy. Later on, she'd face similar situations as a little league coach and as a junior football league coach, and even had wacky taste in costumes as a possible skating competitor. For the bowling tournament, she loses the respect of both Blanche and Dorothy as she decides to partner with one at the harried shock of the other, drops the one she dropped the other one for, finds herself without a partner when the unseen partner she chooses has to drop out of the contest. Instead, she ends up with Sophia as a partner, and Sophia is barely bigger than the ball. Betty White's energy is ferocious in this episode, and she is very funny, along with Estelle Getty who wants Dorothy to give her money to escort her boyfriend (an adorable Ralph Manza) back to Italy. Manza, it must be mentioned, is the cute old man who ended up with Grandma Yette on an episode of "The Nanny". But overall, this is Betty's episode, because as she shows us here, when she is crossed, this Rose grows thorns.

The Competition (#1.7)

Warning: Spoilers
It is time for a bowling competition and our girls are participating. After dumping partners many times we end up with two teams: Rose/Sophie vs Blanche/Dorothy.They all have a reason to compete. Sophie wants to go to Sicily and needs to win against Dorothy to do that. Blanche needs revenge on Rose for dumping her and Rose is just too competitive.

A pretty entertaining episode. Rose is especially funny with her over the top competitiveness which also brings some great laugh out loud lines from he character.

And it is sweet to see Dorothy lose to make Sophie happy and give her the experience of going to Sicily with her old love.
