The term "muckraker" refers to a journalist or author who searches for and exposes scandals and abuses occurring in business and politics. It originated with the crusading journalists of the early 1900s, such as Upton Sinclair. His 1906 book "The Jungle" exposed conditions in the U.S. meat packing industry.
