An interesting story idea...with an odd psychological motivation.
planktonrules16 November 2009
The episode begins with Loretta Switt coming home after a long night out drinking. Some person, whose face is unseen, approaches her--slaps her around and then gets in a car and runs her over--leaving her for dead! This is a pretty graphic start to season 2.

When the police investigate, they notice a pattern--three different ladies worked as 'entertainers' as a local bar and were all killed just after marrying men who were on leave from Vietnam and who subsequently died as well! This could not just be a coincidence and so Five-O gets involved. It appears as if a conspiracy is going on--and someone is faking marriage certificates to make it appear as if these ladies married men who had survivor benefits coming from insurance policies. Kono and Chin are pretty successful digging into the records to determine that a local marriage registrar is behind at least part of the crime. But with more answers yet to be had, Danno goes under cover--and does a pretty lousy job of it because he pushed way too hard and fast to get answers.

Who else is involved and why the women were also killed is something you'll need to see for yourself. The idea is pretty interesting and while not a great episode, it is good and a decent start to season 2. The only reason I didn't score it a bit higher is that you'd think a cop could do a better job undercover than Danny and his very awkward actions.

By the way, this episode was directed by Nicholas Colasanto--the same guy who later played 'Coach' on "Cheers".

Saved by the gorgeous Barabara Luna

Warning: Spoilers
OK episode which starts with a surprisingly gory (for the time) murder scene and doesn't let go (well, a little during Danny's, ahem, "undercover" work with gorgeous Barbara Luna, but who's gonna pay attention to their improbable dialogue when she's walking around in all kinds of skimpy outfits .... Man !! She's one of my favourite 60's actresses (along with Barbara Eden, Susanne Pleshette, Susan Oliver, etc) and always a pleasure to watch ) Some funny macho posturing between McGarrett and tough guy Harry Guardino who made a specialty of playing authority figures going over the edge (see his other crazy soldier role in the HUMAN FACTOR episode of THE OUTER LIMITS). As usual with HAWAI 5-0's first and second season, some technical difficulties occur with the sound whenever characters are on the beach (in this episode, some lines of dialogue between Danny and Luna are lost by the sound of waves crashing nearby !!). Subtitles may be required.

Top notch episode of H5-0. With a couple of problems. SPOILER ALERT! Read this review AFTER you watch the show.

Warning: Spoilers
Danno lands a stunningly beautiful girl in his undercover quest to find out who is knocking off the "wives" of KIA soldiers.

First up... when Danno, dressed as a soldier, goes into the bar, and the men outnumber the women, that is a very real scenario. Any Veteran can relate to those kind of bars, where the drooling girl-starved troops outnumber the pretty girls by 10 to 1. Of course, those girls are often referred to as "Camp Followers" or "Camp Tramps", because they are either prostitutes, or they are scheming small town girls who hope to marry a career officer who has a good salary. That part of the story is accurate.

What is not so accurate, is that Danno goes to the bar, and a drop-dead knockout girl (BarBara Luna) is sitting by herself. Not realistic... she would have been swarmed by guys trying to hit on her. But somehow Danno has her all to himself. Okay, it's a TV show, and co-star Danno has to get the girl, so we'll overlook that.

Another questionable part of the story... Danno drinks himself into oblivion. Now, anyone who thinks that an undercover cop is never going to take a drink of liquor while on the job, doesn't know any undercover cops. They are not going to follow McGarrett's advice, "You should have poured the drink into a plant". However, a good cop is not going to get stupid drunk while pursuing a potential informer.

And one other thing... hungover Danno drinks some black coffee, and the hangover is gone? No... he would have needed a day to sleep it off.

But here is the most frustrating part of this Hawaii Five-0 story (and it is common to many episodes of H5-0): the story ends with no epilogue, no closure. The cops shoot the bad guy multiple times, he drops dead to the ground, and then...it's just over. The credits begin to roll. Wait! What about Danno and the beautiful girl (who put her life on the line to help nail the killer). Isn't there going to be a last kiss? A sad farewell? Or maybe Danno is going to stay on with "Yoko", and make the love affair last? We'll never know, because the show just ends.

Some other TV shows also ended with "no epilogue". Perry Mason is a good example. The Judge reads the jury's verdict, the gavel comes down, and the show ends. That was "Perry Mason". Some TV shows had the epilogue edited out in re-runs, so that the network or local TV station could pack in more commercials. And the strange case of "Barnaby Jones", when the DVD's were released, for some unknown reason, CBS cut off the epilogue. Read the reviews for that show, a lot of old-timers say, "Hey I saw it when it ran in prime time, there was an epilogue, where did it go?" But with H5-0, there never was an epilogue. And with this story, it was particularly annoying.

Aside from that, this is a good story. It is also particularly graphic, when character "Anna" (actress Loretta "Hot Lips" Swit) is run over by a Jeep and left face down dead in the road with her underwear showing. That was rather gory for 1969 when this show first aired.

Given the lack of an epilogue, I ding this one star. So my rating for "A Thousand Pardons" is 9 stars.

Rock and Roll Start
zboston318 October 2008
Warning: Spoilers
The long running series hits its stride in a slam bang season opener.

Hot Lips Houlihan (Loretta Swit) gets offed before the first wave rolls in, and from there on the action is fast and the bodies fall.

The director shows a preference for unusual camera angles, especially those close ups of actors really emoting, while McGarrett goes mano a mano with a cold blooded killer. And Dano, he gets to spend the afternoon on the beach with the luscious Barbara Luna wearing a skimpy swim suit. That was a real hardship assignment.

After a first season that was a tad less than memory painted it, this start of a new season really gets the pulse pounding.

Good episode but not for a premiere but placement of episodes weren't chosen as carefully back then since most stories were stand alone
lukebernstein34 December 2019
Something about the original will always be better than the remake to me. The stories are better. Or at least I can remember them better. The remake was made to be more of an action show. I don't remember much of the stand alone stories and even the big action is packed into certain episodes. Every episode of the original can be enjoyed on its own and its own story be enjoyed and I think remembered better. More focus was put on good writing and diolouge, especially between Jack Lord and the various guest stars. Jack Lord had a few good scenes of diolouge with the main villian. No "action" until the end and it's just the bad guy getting shot really quickly. The story in this one was good. The original series does have a few problems sometimes even though I doprefer it to the remake. Danno goes undercover with a girl in this one and presses her to much for information. And that plot line is just left there. No scene when she discovers he was a cop all along. No good ending scene for danno in the episode. And also sometimes a problem I have with the original is sometimes episodes just end abruptly. No ending scene with mcgarrett and his team talking about the case, like the ending scenes i like in Perry Mason that wrap up the episodes. In this episode it has a decent story. But the villian is shot and then they walk toward his body and the credits pop up in an abrupt ending. No wrap up like in Perry Mason. Id like to think they at least shot scenes like that but just couldn't fit them into the 50 minutes. Overall this episode was good but the wo fat episode comming up just a few episodes later would have been better for a season premiere.
