When you need an actor to stomp about, bluster and pop blood vessels, call in Simon Oakland!

I love seeing Simon Oakland in old TV shows. That's because he almost always played the same sort of bigger than life characters. He ALWAYS was angry, blustery and grouchy--and those were only in his calmer moments!! Oakland was wonderfully campy as a grouchy middle-aged sourpuss--and here in "The Waterfront Steal" he is once again a guest star on "Hawaii Five-O"--and is highly entertaining.

The show begins with a warehouse robbery. It turns out that it's one of MANY recent robberies with the same m.o.--and one of the warehouse owners (Oakland) is hopping mad. He spends much of his time screaming at the governor but occasionally he takes a break and screams at McGarrett! And so there is definite pressure to catch the creeps. But who is responsible for organizing this ring and what is its purpose? And what about Richard Hatch (the cute one from "Battlestar Galactica"-not to be confused with the naked guy from "Survivor" with the same name)--what does he and his very cute girlfriend have to do with all this? Overall, this is an interesting episode but it is not a great one. I would have given it a 7 had it not been for Oakland--a man you can't help but love to hate! See this one--he makes it worth while.

This was another "old home week" episode of casting. First we have Tommy Fujiwara, who guest starred on a phenomenal 24 Hawaii 5-0 episodes! He played a private-eye, various criminals, and in this on a police detective. :-) Some series "regulars" didn't get that many shows. LOL

Richard Hatch (Captain Apollo on Battlestar Galactica) made his third and last appearance ... after first being a baby stealer and then a sort of psycho stalker. Here he's just a small-time warehouse robber.

Rich Marlow is another member of the gang and a five-time veteran of the series. Here he's nominally in charge of the gang, but not the "big guy".

Simon Oakland also appeared on 5-0 five times. He always got "take charge" roles, and this was in character for him.

A highlight is the beautiful and buxom Kathleen Beller, later a regular on Dynasty, who showed off her considerable assets in a yellow bikini on the beach. That scene almost makes the episode worth watching all on its own. ;-)

The story itself isn't that unusual. 5-0 tries to solve a string of warehouse robberies, and they don't really do much to solve them. The robbers more or less solve the case themselves. LOL.
