The Germans are interested in whether Sergeant Carter ( Larry Hovis ) has knowledge of chemical weapons. In World War I (1914-18) Germany used chemical weapons in combat. The Geneva Protocol is a treaty prohibiting the use of chemical and biological weapons in international armed conflicts. It was signed at Geneva on 17 June 1925 and entered into force on 8 February 1928.
In WWI trench warfare all sides used chemical weapons, mostly chlorine gas and mustard gas. Those first generation CW agents were so crudely devastating and brutal they horified all of Europe. CW was universally outlawed. In WWII the Germans invented nerve gasses like Sarin, stockpiling over 12,000 tons, yet never used it on the battlefield. At the same time the Nazis were quite willing to use poison gas to slaughter millions of defenseless prisoners.
Hogan's Heroes had many vamps who tried to use their feminine ways
to seduce Hogan and his men: Mata Hari, Axis Annie, Berlin Betty,..
Antoinette Bower played "Leni Richter" here, then would play "Berlin Betty" a week before Christmas in 1969. (i.e., Is There a Traitor in the House? (1969))
Interestingly enough, both episodes involve one of the gang pretending to be a traitor. In this episode, it's Carter, in the 1969 episode, it's Newkirk.

The opening theme is faster than normal.
By the title, Carter turns traitor - well, as Hogan designs it. For Schultz, Lebeau, Kinchloe and
Newkirk are stalking Carter with homemade saber, gun and Bow & Arrow. (Naturally, to get
the 'traitor' before he squeals on them)
It would be three years later when Carter discovers he's part Sioux that he makes his own bow & arrow. Yet, it would be Newkirk who calls up his Robin Hood skills to apply it against the Nazis in Drums Along the Dusseldorf (1968).
