A quality character study.

Lady Shaw is caught stealing a scarf from a department store, The Wife of a Judge, she offers up no defence for her husband. Her husband, Sir Desmond is determined to hire the best possible Barrister, and aims to sort the situation himself.

Another very good episode, it's the most dry installment so far, it teeters on being a case of melodrama, domestic troubles on the surface, but of course there's the mystery element, why is Desmond the way he is, what's led to the domestic cruelty.

There are two very strong performances, André Morell and Avice Landone are both brilliant in their leading parts.

Desmond is an absolute brute of a man, opinionated, domineering and so self righteous, but of course there's so much more going on, is Desmond perhaps suffering from PTSD. Morell delivers a first class performance, the scenes between him and Lom are outstanding.

Landone is excellent as his long suffering wife, there is a great scene where she finally snaps.

8/10.

Lady Shaw seems to have it all. A wealthy lifestyle and a husband who is a judge.

However Sir Desmond Shaw (Andre Morrell) is a controlling man, he has already driven away their daughter as he does not like her husband.

Lady Shaw has reacted by getting caught shoplifting. Dr Corder looks into her compulsion and believes that the real patient is Judge Shaw.

While talking to Shaw's former friend and also a doctor. Corder finds out that Shaw was once a gregarious man but something happened during world war one.

There is a nice performance from Morrell. He comes across as a heartless brute. There is a lot here about women who spend decades being hemmed in by their husbands before reaching breaking point.

DON'T BE SO JUDGMENTAL

Warning: Spoilers
The acting performances of Andre Morell(the severe judge) and Herbert Lom(the shrink) make this episode memorable for purposes of believability and entertaining television. Many of the other cast members deliver lines in boring monotone. The plot contained scenes that were busied and various which added to its value. The happily -ever -after ending defied realism. Effectively one session with the shrink and the severe judge was transformed as if by magic into a sensitive new-age guy. Some people must believe that cows can jump over the moon.
