- Al Mundy (Robert Wagner) is sent to retrieve a lost computer part that has fallen into the hands of chess player by SIA operative Noah Bain (Malachi Throne). The chess player, Harry Lavender, (Nehemiah Persoff) demands payment for the part. A Russian agent, Sagalis, (Stuart Margolin being the leader of the Russian contingent) is also interested in obtaining the part. Two young SIA agents are hired to try to get the part by offering ransom money. They are killed (forced off the road by the Russian agents) and Al must play a game of chess with the chess player in order to try to negotiate the purchase of the computer part. Along the way he impersonates being an Air Force colonel and he uses several Air Force servicemen (Greg Mullavey as an Air Force captain) as a diversion to keep the Russian agents occupied. With the death of the surviving SIA agent in the hospital, the leads on finding the computer part dries up. Just before the chess game is to begin, a mysterious woman comes into the game room and attracts Al's attention. Her entrance into the room has Al, Harry Lavender, and the Russian agents wondering who she could be. The Russian agents believe that the Air Force servicemen have located the computer part (Al having directed the Air Force servicemen on several tasks to dig a hole and scuba dive) and try to murder them, but are thwarted. Al loses the chess match, but is still able to negotiate for the computer part. Harry Lavender agrees to sell to the highest bidder. Al is able to outbid the Russian offer, but the Russian agent, Sagalis, takes the money and computer part by threat of a gun. The mysterious woman interrupts Sagalis and takes the money and computer part and flees. Al is able to join her in the car as they drive away. After eluding the pursuers, the mysterious woman reveals her true identity that she is a SIA agent herself, General Tess Trueheart (Carol Locatell).
