wonderful allegories
mikejohnson662025 December 2014
The plot summary is deliberately vague, so here are some examples of allegory in this very cool episode. They may be regarded as spoilers, but knowing them will make anticipation even better.

You say you want an example of allegory? A young Marine named Joseph (yes Joseph) Tenny is touring his new duty station with his pregnant wife Mary (they have been evicted because of some foul-up, though, and have no place to stay) when she goes into labor and has the baby in the Admiral's office. (The Admiral's middle name is Jethro.)

Meanwhile, three Arab lawyers in robes and headpieces just flew in from Kuwait to observe JAG's military justice system but are driving lost, all three with different interpretations of their only map, until they see the radio tower beacon on JAG's roof, and follow it, arriving just in time to give the Marine couple gifts from afar to celebrate their new boy, including a gold coin and a free apartment (one Arab confesses he owns 16 apartment buildings in Washington alone).

At the same moment, a C-130 Hercules full of Toys for Tots loses its instrumentation in heavy fog (yes, of course it's a foggy Christmas Eve –what did you expect?) and is guided for a landing by the hero in an F-14 with a red ID light on its nose blinking (yes Rudolph and "won't you guide my sleigh tonight" music etc.).

Those are just a few examples. The writers must have really loved doing this one. It works. It's not laugh-out-loud funny, it's more an-appreciative-smile humor.

Enjoy it!

Total Delight

My wife and I caught this gem last night - wonderful evocative tribute to many Christmas stories and legends we all know. You have to watch very carefully but many are hidden in the plot and you will jump when you find one. The only missing agents are the Grinch and Charlie Brown. As a Christmas show this is up there with the best of them.

A Christmas gem to end 2002

If you only watch a few episodes from the 200+ ten-year run of JAG, have this one on your list to watch and enjoy.

Ignore those purists who pick holes in continuity, F-14 nose markings etc. Just enjoy the creativity of the writing team who, presumably, were by this time drafting/writing the penultimate season Nine (and we all know how that went!).

This episode is a joyful celebration of so many Christmas tropes and I enjoyed it the first time I saw it and again recently whilst gathering intel for a FFN story.

Both ashore and afloat, our heroic cast wrestle through problems and bring enjoyable outcomes to a number of situations.

Warning: Spoilers
Also alluded to: Joseph is A Drummer Boy, there is a Warrant Officer Scrogg(ins), Bud tells little A.J. Who is playing with rubber bands, that he will " shoot your eye out" and my favorite is Harm and Admiral Boone meet Lt. Clarence. Of course, Tiner is always fun to watch!

A great Christmas episode. Absolutely loved it. I smiled everytime I realised a corny little Christmas detail.

just pathetic

Tony dennison plays a cry baby angry commander air group and hates rabb with a passion, meanwhile coates is settling in at jag ... bud and harriette have problems with the navy paymaster ... what else is new ... unfortunately there are morons in the navy as well as real life ... paymasters have the authority to advance funds for such contingency situations ... a navy lt and an ensign should have been able to draw advance pay of about a grand until their pay problems were resolved ... lakehurst nas doesn't have tomcats and never did ... the writers of this series apparently don't have a clue as to how the military works and that is its downfall
