- As Amy decides the fate of a ten year old boy who was kidnapped by his adoptive parents when they lost custody to his birth mother, she finds an answer to some of her own family's pressing concerns; Bruce is back at work as Amy's C.S.O. and is completing his community service at a soup kitchen; Amy gets the silent treatment from Lauren when she won't let her become a cheerleader, but both sides are forced to relent when Gillian unwittingly spills the beans about her own and Amy's cheer leading pasts; Maxine's refusal to sell her house to buyers she doesn't like leaves Peter feeling angry and unappreciated, so she hatches a plan that heals both him and a badly abused client; at the behest of his sponsor, Kyle applies to every residency program in the area, and Amy agrees to write him a letter of recommendation; Maxine finally finds the perfect buyer for her house.—Splinter Sam
- Maxine (Tyne Daly) receives an offer on her house, which she rejects, upsetting Peter (Marcus Giamatti) , who has been working hard to get the house sold.
Amy (Amy Brenneman) rules in a case in which a boy, Joel (Daniel Hansen), had been mistakenly taken from his mother after birth and given to Mr. and Mrs. Collins (Paul Tulley and Lisa Blount). Despite a court order awarding custody to the birth mother, Lucy Parnell (Alyson Croft), the couple had retained custody and fled to Arizona. Lucy spent 10 years looking for him with the help of private investigators. In a difficult decision, Amy returns Joel to Lucy's custody, although the Collinses are the only parents he has ever known.
Maxine's client Jimmy (Zane Holtz) broke into the shop area at his school and was expelled. He had wanted wanted to use the tools to make a battle bot. Seeing that Jimmy is passionate about the battle bots, Maxine appeals to the school's club to let him join, but the advisor rejects him as a member. It then occurs to her that Peter might be willing to sponsor Jimmy as a community outreach effort for his company. Peter turns out to be a fan of the battle bots himself, and they work together to build his robot.
Lauren (Karle Warren) and Amy disagree about whether Lauren can be a cheerleader, but in the end Lauren joins the squad.
Kyle (Kevin Rahm) is trying to get into a residency program, having already been rejected by six schools. He asks Amy to write him a letter of reference, and she agrees.
Bruce (Richard T. Jones) rejoins Amy in the courtroom and does his community service.
At the conclusion of the episode, Peter reports that a new offer has been received on the house. As Peter outlines the offer, it becomes clear to Maxine that it's Amy who is offering to buy the house. She accepts.
