The main plot involves Doug and Carrie visiting Doug's parents in Florida and looking at some old pictures of Doug as a teenager. Carrie seems to be the only one who thinks it odd that the dog, Rocky, his parents now own is the same dog in photos from 1976--27 years earlier.
She learns from Doug's mom that because Doug was sensitive, they never told him when the dog died, just got another one. The one line I liked here was when Doug's dad revealed, "This is Rocky IV." Carrie further learns that she is the cause of the demise/running away of Rocky III, when she stayed with them shortly before she and Doug were married and left the door open.
After telling Doug what his parents had been doing, he is alarmed and confronts his parents, who also reveal that he repeated kindergarten and that he was born in Canada, while they were visiting.
Why I didn't find any of this funny is the total illogic. You can have crazy illogic, like the way much of the action on Seinfeld took place, or on Green Acres, and have it be hilarious. But this just seemed dumb.
How could little Dougie have thought, as the show said, that he was in "Super-kindergarten" when all his friends from last year's kindergarten were now in first grade. And when the super-kindergartners were doing all the same things he did in school a year ago? Even if he couldn't tell the dogs apart, if he regularly, as stated, spends a few days at his parents', he would have certainly noticed differences in the way the dog behaves. I had two Yorkies that looked so much alike, I have trouble figuring which one is in a given old photo...but they did many things quite differently and there would have been no way to not notice they were different dogs.
The third thing--born in Canada--was the worst. Doug simply said, "I'm Canadian." Uhhh, no. Born of two American citizens just visiting, makes him American, as virtually everyone knows.
Then they finished the show with a really stupid thing of Doug attending a hockey game by himself--none of his friends around at all. When they play the Canadian anthem, he stands up to honor his country. What is dumb is that they show all the other fans just sitting in their seats, wearing hats, eating and talking during the anthem. No way.
The funny part that got the show 5 stars from me dealt with Spence getting Arthur to serve as a "buffer" for a dinner where Spence's girlfriend meets his mom. When Spence's mom starts alarming the girlfriend, Spence goes to the kitchen with Arthur asking him why he didn't jump in like he had been asked to do. Arthur says, "I thought things were going swimmingly," (or something similar).
Then, when he tries to help Spence, Arthur winds up attacking the girlfriend for being selfish for not organizing her co-workers into a union, calling her "worthless," and more, getting her to leave in a huff.
Right before that happens, I most liked the scene where Arthur and Spence's mom (Anne Meara, Jerry Stiller's real wife) get into an argument about how good of a catch Spence is, and whether this girl is as good as he will be able to attract or not--right in front of the couple.
