- The entire precinct is shocked when one of their most trusted officers, Tom Donnoly is shot dead carrying $10.000 in his pocket. Kojak has just 48 hours to clear Donnoly's name and make sure he gets buried with honors.
- A distinguished NYPD cop, Tom Donnelly, is murdered at point blank range, and on his body is a wallet containing $10,000 in 100 dollar bills. When the department suspects that he was dirty, Kojak goes on the case to personally handle the investigation to clear his name by his funeral, in 48 hours. In doing so, he has to investigate and deal with Donnelly's former partner in the case, Officer Geno Alessi, who is very angry over the suspicions regarding his partner.
Kojak learns from a visit to Donnelly's widow Madge that she and Tom had not been intimate in months, and that his son Jack had been removed from the NYPD Police Academy. It turned out the reason for his son's removal was that he had a morals charged based on homosexual acts. He now moves to find the source of the $10,000, leading him to a police informant, Sammy Marino, that told Donnelly and Alessi where to stakeout. The tips proved to be false as someone a step ahead warned the gang ahead of time so they wouldn't get busted.
When Sammy Marino turns up dead in an alley and Jack avoids returning back home, Kojak goes directly to Jack to get the truth out of him. Jack confesses to Kojak that he told his father that $300 he found in his room was money from extorting a john and got angry. Kojak correctly assumes that Jack used his father's duty schedule to tip off the gang and got paid for it, and Jack admits finally that it was the case. It turned out that his father was going to confront one of the men because he incorrectly assumed it was for the extortion, when in reality it was a gang member who he confronted and shot him. Jack's guilt is too overpowering as he gives up the gang member who shot his father, a man named Kimbrough.
Kojak and his men go to the apartment where the gang is holed up, and Jack gets one of the members to buzz him in. Kojak then goes ahead, shooting at one of the men at the top of the stairs, and busts open the apartment door. Jack tells Kojak that he forgot there was an escape to the roof, and gunfire is exchanged. In the fight, Jack gets shot by Kimbrough and survives, but Detective Crocker intercepts Kimbrough on the roof and he is apprehended. The funeral then goes as planned, and Tom Donnelly's name is forever cleared.
