Rafer Johnson, former Olympic athlete, who won a 1960 Olympic gold medal in the decathlon (he also won silver in the 1956 games), played one of the construction gang workers, Pete, and has a major role in saving Lassie. This role was one of the few early 1960s roles for an African-American where the person was not a servant or a train conductor.
