Penny Marshall sure knows how to direct Lenny and Squiggy

Lenny and Squiggy go on a Dating Game show (why, I don't know) and shockingly, despite his inappropriate answers, the girl picks Squiggy. But he refuses to date her because Lenny was heartbroken, at least he cares about his friend's feelings. The girl is beautiful and he makes a good point if she's so hot why is she on a dating show.

Another Penny directed episode

Which means we don't get to see the girls do much in this episode but are treated to a very funny opening scene where Laverne is stuck in a dress so tight that she can't get out of it until Rhonda comes to the rescue. But afterwards, the girls are once again rude to poor Rhonda who seems to be making every effort to be a friendly neighbor to them. I wish it were explained why they don't like her and why they treat her like dirt. It's just so weird and confusing because Laverne & Shirley aren't mean people.

All that fun stuff happened in the first few minutes because Penny had to get back behind the camera to direct the rest of the episode. And that's all about Lenny & Squiggy going on the Dating Game.

I can only take those two characters in small doses and when the whole episode is focused on them I just don't find it entertaining. There's a reason there was never a "Lenny & Squiggy" spin off---those characters just can't carry a whole show and are only good in small scenes where they enter, act silly and exit stage left.

I didn't care for the whole Dating Game plot but it was interesting to see how the game worked. I guess that concept was titillating to 1960's TV audiences but I just found it all boring.

The five star rating i'm giving is all for the opening scene with Laverne stuck in her dress. I could've watched the whole half hour of just that and been more entertained.
