Solid effort

The episode is a tour de force for Armin Shimerman, who plays a mentally unbalanced man driven to assassinate a senator by God (according to him). But the truth is more complex. His character may be a little on the autistic savant side, too, as he recites the alphabet backwards faster than anyone else can do foward and makes complex math calculations in his head.

That said, the episode seems a touch below average in terms of the quality of the previous episodes, possibly due to the lack of a strong female part. In fact, I don't believe any of the female characters in this episode have lines.

Of the remainder of the supporting players, William Lucking shines as the sheriff, and Joe Urla does a good job as the preacher who isn't quite as blameless as he seems. Craig Richard Nelson is good as the judge called into adjudicate the killer's case. The mutton chop whiskers were a great touch and put me in mind of Isaac Asimov.

Urich's performance is top notch, as usual, and I only wish he had lived long enough to make another season or two of this fine program.
