The short memories of children...
AlsExGal11 January 2024
... curse or blessing? Probably a blessing when it comes to not holding a grudge, perhaps a curse when it comes to consistency.

Beaver gets permission for Larry Mondello to sleep over on Saturday night. But within hours after he arrives, Larry and Beaver have a falling out and Larry insists that he wants to go home. The only problem is that the Mondellos left town for the night, so that is not possible and the Cleaver car is in the shop. While Ward and June are figuring out the logistics of getting Larry to a different relative other than his parents, Larry and Beaver forget all about what happened, begin to play together again, and Larry now insists he wants to stay. Will the peace hold? Watch and find out.

I've seen this situation from both sides - child and parent - and though I can't remember much from the side of being a child, I can remember it from the parental side. June and Ward are right - one child that is not your own is much harder to handle than one that is. That's probably because you have to tread lightly lest you offend the visiting child's parents.

Is there a doctor in the house? Or, give me those candy bars right now.

Warning: Spoilers
June tells Ward that Beaver is having a friend over for the night: Larry Mondello. Ward agrees but Wally isn't enthused and some of June's support disappears when she hears Larry has a pet rat. When Larry shows up he has everything but pajamas; Larry figures he can wear a pair of Beaver's. And no rat, to June's relief.

Ward is doing burgers and hot dogs and is ready for Beaver and Larry; but Larry is on the front porch. Larry has been sitting there for half an hour. Larry wants to go home claiming Beaver hit him in the stomach. Ward is trying to straighten it out and has June fetch the Beaver for a meeting in the living room. Larry wants to go to his grandma's. Ward is willing to get a taxi so Larry can go to his Grandma's, but while he's inside making the call, Wally announces the burgers are on fire. Don't you think Ward should call Larry's grandma first? A taxi arrives but Larry doesn't know what the cab is there for. Larry and the Beaver are having fun and Beaver reminds Ward he said Larry could stay overnight. Ward has to tip the cabby. The food Ward attempted to grill gets eaten, Ward was amazed at how much Larry could eat and what he ate: ketchup on corn on the cob.

Wally is still moaning about having to sleep in the back bedroom but that argument is going nowhere. Finally, everyone is asleep, but at midnight Beaver wakes Ward. Larry is sick. Larry thinks it's his appendix. Ward figure it was all the food plus the ketchup and corn, not to mention the candy bars Larry stashed behind his pillow and has been eating on and off all night. Later Beaver wakes Ward to tell him Larry is alright, but he wants his candy bars back.

Mrs. Mondello comes to get Larry and we have the usual lies about how well Larry behaved. Larry wants to stay longer but luckily Mrs. Mondello doesn't want Larry to wear out his welcome.

Ward and June are exhausted. Thank god, the torment is over and things can get back to normal. Ward and June are no doubt figuring out how to insure Larry never stays again. Unfortunately, the worst is yet to come. When Wally was whining about Beaver having a friend over, Ward said Wally could have a friend of his over in the future. The future is basically now. Wally is ready to cash in on Ward's promise. Wally already invited Eddie Haskell. Oh, and he wants him this coming weekend. Larry Mondello is probably looking better already.

I remember those sleepover days. I had a large room, basically the entire attic. Over the years I had a few friends over, but we didn't get into trouble. We got into trouble during the summers when we slept outside at night in the tent we had. It was a big tent and slept five boys, but slept was an exaggeration. You could make book that some father would end up at the flap door yelling if we didn't quiet down he would wake all our fathers and be sure they got to the seat of the problem. That usually worked, but on occasion the "seat" was served.

Classic Larry episode
vitoscotti7 March 2021
Ward must have forgot about Larry drilling holes in the garage the previous episode. Nothing ever runs smooth with Larry involved. Anytime Larry or his mother (Madge Blake) are on screen it's really funny stuff. Beaver's will power crumbles when Larry prods him to go astray. Good to go back to a comedy theme after a lesson theme in previous episodes.

Three Stooges fans might notice Frank Sully as the cab driver who played Big Mike in "Fright Night".

LARRY COMES TO VISIT AND EAT!
tcchelsey8 December 2023
Rusty Stevens was memorable as Larry Mondello, and this was a showcase episode for him. It's one of those "Mom has to go out of town, and can I stay over?...." stories, spot on writing by show producers Joe Connelly and Bob Mosher.

It's really a true to life story, because how many of us kids wanted a good pal to stay overnight and the stay was not always fun. Problems, problems...

Ward is doing the fatherly thing and cookin' up the burgers on the grill, all the while Beave and Larry slowly begin to have issues?

I agree with the last reviewer, the scenes with Larry or his mother (Madge Blake) are very funny, especially Mrs. Mondello whose husband always seems to be away on business and she looks like she's ready to scream! Larry also has an older sister (who we never see), complicating matters for his short fuse mom. There are a lot of unexplained things in the Mondello household, which may have been a gag thrown in by the writers, or something to build on in later episodes. It was always a head scratcher.

Matters do change, and in the middle of the night, when Larry wakes up sick as a dawg, this due to all the candy bars he smuggled into the house and stuffed under his pillow. By the way, while all this is going on, poor Wally is put into a guest room and is kind of on his own, which may be a blessing in disguise.

Veteran character actor Frank Sully plays a cab driver, who was in tons of movies and classic tv shows, such as I LOVE LUCY.

And yes... Ward must have forgotten the hole Larry drilled in the garage wall in the last episode?

From SEASON 1 remastered Universal dvd box set. And with a classic color cover.
