That rascal Haskell tells a tall story
AlsExGal21 May 2024
The students of Mayfield High School draw names of students at Riverside High School to take to a dance that's all part of a social experiment by one of the teachers. Eddie comes to Wally and says he wants to switch dates, because the girl Wally is taking is somebody he knows and thus wants to take. Wally is suspicious given Eddie's sneaky past, but when Eddie shows Wally a picture from the Riverdale High School yearbook of the girl Wally would be taking if he and Eddie switched dates, he admits she's pretty and agrees. Wally arranges to meet the girl he is taking - Eddie's original date - at the soda shop so they can get acquainted prior to the dance, and she is not only pretty but seems pretty nice. And then she gets up to leave - she's four inches taller than Wally! He's been had by the antics of Eddie Haskell.

Wally talks to his dad about this and says he wants to back out of the dance because he will get nonstop ribbing from the guys if he shows up with this girl who towers over him. Ward gives him some advice but says, at Wally's age, he is not going to tell him he must go on the date, that he must use his own best judgment. So Wally decides to go through with it and tries combing out his hair "tall" and wearing lifts. How will this all work out? Watch and find out, although I did think the resolution not very realistic.

If you notice Eddie and Lumpy having closely cropped hair and Lumpy looking like he lost weight, Ken Osmond and Frank Bank were both in the reserves at this time as they were both over 18, and serving in that capacity meant they didn't have to take their chances with the draft, although the Vietnam War wouldn't really rev up for another four years.

This is one time where it looks like Wally really is going to give Eddie a badly deserved punch in the nose when June walks in and Eddie manages to get away. In the 1983 movie "Still The Beaver", Wally finally does give Eddie one punch and Eddie mentions it was the only time in thirty years that he hit him. From what I've seen of the series, that seems to be correct, although Eddie rightfully got close to being "clobbered" by Wally several times.

Eddie is wheeling, and dealing

Sometimes things get magnified how bad they are. Both Wally & Eddie come out in good shape. Funny, the dance is "squaresville". Lumpy (Frank Bank) looks like he's lost weight.

Sometimes everyone matures; but not Eddie.

Warning: Spoilers
A school dance is coming up, but it's an exchange dance. The boys from Wally's high school will be paired with girls from a rival school; and the girls from that school with the boys from Wally's school. Wally has been paired with Marjorie Mulller. Eddie wants to swap girls, claiming he knew Marjorie and they really hit it off. Really, a girl hit it off with Eddie? Every alarm bell in the world should be going off. Eddie even brought over a yearbook from the other school; and Gail, "Eddie's date" is very pretty. Eddie says he has never met Gail, so Wally would be making a better trade based on looks. Wally jumps for the trade. You know Eddie is screwing Wally. Even Ward knows something is wrong when he hears about the swap.

Wally gets a chance to meet Gail in a soda shop because her mother had to go into town. She's sitting in a booth, and she is pretty. And she knows and met Eddie over a month ago. And the sucker punch, she is a good four inches taller than Wally, she's a giant. Then Eddie shows up at the Cleaver house to pick up the yearbook. When he hears Wally met the girl and is on the way home, he tries to escape. Wally runs upstairs and is about to clobber Eddie, but Eddie is saved by June at the last minute.

Ward knows Wally isn't happy about taking Gail to the dance, and has a discussion with Wally; but tells Wally the decision to go to the dance is Wally's. June has her usual meaningless contribution to make: she's sure Wally with just forget the girl towers over him.

Wally is miserable: how can he dance with a girl when he can't even look into her eyes. No matter, Wally goes to the dance, because we know Wally has more heart than Eddie ever will. When Eddie arrives, he makes sure to introduce Marjorie, just to "rub-it-in." However, Gail saves the night: she wore flats and wore her hair down and not up, now she's exactly Wally's height. Wally and Gail hit it off; Wally refuses to let anyone cut in.

Beaver tries calling with a "rescue" call which I though was pretty inventive of him. Wally has to explain the calls, but Gail says not to worry because she understands. Wally is over the moon: he can't believe he met a girl who understands him.

The next morning June and Ward are having a breakfast chat speculating on Wally's date. June says when she was set up with a boy shorter than her, she just wore her hair down and had on flats. Ward says he doubts if teenagers today would be that kind to one another.

And no doubt the most satisfying line in the episode occurred when Wally went upstairs to confront Eddie. Ward's response to June when she voiced a concern that Wally might take a poke at Eddie and Ward should go upstairs, and Ward responds, "I don't know. I think I'll wait about half an hour, and then go up and check." It was a good episode. I don't know if it might have been effective for Ward to talk with Wally about how the girl might be feeling. It is, after all, a half hour show and it's difficult to cover every base. Maybe Wally learned something, or maybe he just had a nice evening. But that's the way life works.

Here's to looking into her eyes, not her collarbone

Warning: Spoilers
It's the 16th (oh man) and as a way to get the senior class used to what the real world will be like Social Science teacher Mrs. Mulligan will have the Mayfield boys pick the names of Riverside girls out of a bowl and I guess vice versa. Wally and a very trimmed down Lumpy are dreading the assignment.

Wally picks Marjorie Muller out of the bowl but slick Eddie Haskell convinces Wally to switch dates. Wally is now going with Gail Preston and Eddie is going with Majorie. Let the good times roll!

Unbeknownst to Eddie, Wally arranges a get together with Gail before the dance and finds out that Gail is a head taller than he is and like most teens since Wally doesn't like to stand out in a crowd, he has a fit. I would think Wally would be more upset over the fact that Gail looks exactly like June Cleaver in this episode but no, it's her height.

Ward convinces Wally to do the right thing by thinking about Gail's feelings and take her to the dance. When Wally arrives at the dance, Gail is presto chango the same height as Wally thanks to flattening her hair and wearing flat shoes. Cute episode.

Wally Wins Out

(*Beaver quote*) - "Mom, can I have some of my allowance ahead of time?"

The boys from Mayfield High are picking names out of a bowl and taking the girls from Riverside High to the upcoming school dance.

After exchanging names with that scoundrel, Eddie Haskell - Wally ends up with blonde cutie-pie, Gail Preston who's above average in height.

And even though, at first, there are some complications about taking Gail to the dance, all works out fine in the long run.
