Some lawmen in the west would do anything to earn bounties and catch outlaws but entrapment was illegal. Earp is faced with this situation when Deputy US Marshal Hank Drew enters his office for help in catching the Rocky Griswold gang steal a gold shipment. Earp says it is entrapment and he refuses to go along even when offered part of the reward. After Drew leaves his office, Joan Deming drops in to talk to Earp. Her father owns a ranch and she is friends with Rocky and his men. She tells Earp they are out of work cowboys who are hungry that she has been helping with handouts. She is afraid Drew is talking them into committing a crime. Drew contacts Mr. Casland and Mayor Kelley about the issue. Kelley wants to go along with Drew while Casland realizes Earp could be correct. Joan while taking food to the gang tries to dissuade Rocky from going along with the robbery but the men are hurting. She tells him she saw Drew talking to Earp but when Drew returns he says he was arrested. Earp develops a plan to take the men without gun play. He along with Joan stops the gang and arrests Drew. However, Earp's job may be in jeopardy now if Rocky and his men refuse to talk.
